PeBL1, a Novel Protein Elicitor from Brevibacillus laterosporus Strain A60, Activates Defense Responses and Systemic Resistance in Nicotiana benthamiana

Abstract: We report the identification, characterization, and gene cloning of a novel protein elicitor (PeBL1) secreted from Brevibacillus laterosporus strain A60. Through a purification process consisting of ion-exchange chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we isolated a protein that was identified by electrospray ionization quadrupole time of flight tandem mass spectrometry ( , and PAL were upregulated to varying degrees by PeBL1. This research not only provides insights into the mechanism… Show more

“…These excitors are derived from a wide variety of sources and types, including proteins, peptides, oligosaccharides and lipids. The elicitors which induce systemic resistance in plants are generally protein peptides and antibiotics in biocontrol bacteria (Wang, Yang, Guo, Zeng, & Qiu, ). For example, lipopeptides and amylin in Bacillus subtilis S499 are involved in the ISR phenomenon that induces disease resistance (Ongena et al, ).…”

“…Extracellular peptides were precipitated using the ammonium sulfate precipitation method with slight modifications [35]. Bacillus subtilis was grown in 200 mL liquid LB supplemented with kanamycin (10 mg/L) and incubated at 180 r/min, 37 • C for 72 h. Supernatants were collected by centrifugation at 10,000× g, 4 • C for 20 min.…”
