Peak athletic performance and ageing: Evidence from baseball

Abstract: Baseball players exhibit a pattern of improvement and decline in performance; however, differing lengths of careers and changes in rules and characteristics of the game complicate assessments of age-related effects on performance. This study attempts to isolate the impact of age on several player skills while controlling for relevant outside factors using longitudinal data from 86 seasons of Major League Baseball. The results indicate that players age in different skills in accord with studies of ageing in oth… Show more

“…Further, as only 1 team was investigated in this study further research appears necessary to fully substantiate these fi ndings. The HC group were signifi cantly older and had greater match experience than the LC group, confi rming a trend that has also been reported for other team sports [ 5 ] . The improvement in the coaches' perception of player performance with age is seemingly linked to player experience and the number of matches played.…”

“…For instance, peak performance in baseball is generally thought to be achieved between the ages of 27 and 30, although peak age varies widely between specific tasks of the game (Schulz et al, 1994;Fair, 2008;and Bradbury, 2009, among others). The peak age in ice hockey, among the most physically demanding of all sports, occurs between 27 and 29 years depending on playing position (Berry, et al, 1999;Brander et al, 2014).…”

“…Athletic tasks requiring strength, speed, and explosive power reach their peak in the early 20s, while tasks requiring endurance, acquired skills, and knowledge peak in the late 20s and early 30s [1]. Regarding different sports disciplines, swimmers achieve peak performance at 21 years, runners in track and field at 26 years [2], tennis players at 24 years [1], golf players at 31 years [1], and baseball players at 29 years [3]. In running, the age of peak performance increased with increasing length of the endurance performance [1,2,4-6], e.g., 23 years for 10,000 m [2], 30 years for a marathon [5], and 39 years for an ultra-marathon [5,6].…”
