This article presents the concept of a Peace-Oriented Mindset (POM), based on peace psychology and the significance of conflict-related context. It highlights the role of preventing conflicts through creating an enabling and peace-supportive milieu, facilitated by individuals with specific peace-oriented capabilities. The phenomenon of POM is analyzed, as well as delineated in the context of the current knowledge in this field. Next, the method used to construct a questionnaire measuring the POM is presented. The POM scale is verified on an N = 1074 representative sample, documenting high reliability. Factor analysis confirms the conjecture that there are three dimensions of the POM: Cognitive, performative, and doability conviction. Moreover, social norms are documented. A cross-segment comparison delivers several insights, e.g., that women have a higher POM level than men and that those who consider themselves leaders or innovators and those who are involved in social activities have a higher POM level than those who do not. The POM concept and scale are valuable resources for identifying future peacebuilders, especially from conflicted communities, as well as for training future youth leaders in the field of peacebuilding. Finally, indications for future studies are discussed, e.g., for verifying the hypothesis that individuals who score high in POM also have higher levels of empathy and compassion.

This entry focuses on intractable conflicts, which have multiple and a complex components. It reviews various peace-maintaining actions, especially those focusing on building an environment that contributes to damping down conflicts and to preventing their outbreak.The role of the peace-fostering environment is presented both from the perspective of the dynamical system theory, as well as illustrated by case studies, leading to a review of peacebuilders' specific personality characteristics. Moreover, multifactorial delineation of the aptitude for fostering peace, especially if intractable or looming, is presented.This delineation led to the process of constructing the peace-oriented mindset (POM) questionnaire, as presented in this entry.The conclusions are that a better cognition of peacebuilders' characteristics may contribute to identifying and training the best leaders in the field of peace maintaining and prevention.

Penelitian ini fokus mengkaji kolaborasi pemerintah daerah Bondowoso dengan para elit lokal sebagai pemimpin informal dalam mewujudkan harmoni keagamaan di Bondowoso pada rentang waktu 2008 hingga saat ini. Terutama dalam konteks relasi antar umat beragama (inter-religious relations) maupun di internal umat beragama (intra-religious relations). Pada rentang waktu tersebut, potensi ketegangan dalam relasi beragama umat beragama di Bondowoso cukup terbuka. Terutama menyangkut isu Sunni dan Syi’ah. Namun, potensi tersebut berhasil dicegah berubah menjadi konflik kekerasan sehingga yang tercipta adalah situasi harmonis dan damai. Sinergi kedua entitas struktur pemerintah dan aktor lokal dalam merawat harmoni beragama menarik bila ditelusuri dari dua fokus utama. Pertama, berkaitan dengan bagaimana potret harmoni keagamaan yang berlangsung di Bondowoso sejak tahun 2008 ; kedua, bagaimana strategi pemerintah Bondowoso membangun perdamaian dalam perspektif pembangunan perdamaian campuran pada rentang waktu tersebut. Berpijak pada dua fokus tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan memahami potret relasi harmoni keagamaan di Bondowoso sejak tahun 2008, serta strategi yang dijalankan pemerintah Bondowoso dalam membangun perdamaian dalam perspektif pembangunan perdamaian campuran. Untuk menjawab fokus penelitian, penelitian ini menggunakan perspektif perdamaian campuran (hybrid peace) sebagai lensa analisis. Perdamaian campuran merupakan tren dalam analisis permbangunan perdamaian yang berorientasi pada titik temu nilai global seperti demokrasi dan segala institusinya termasuk pemerintah daerah dengan aktor-aktor lokal seperti para tokoh agama sebagai salah satu elit lokal yang menentukan dalam mewujudkan harmoni keagamaan. Untuk menghasilkan satu temuan yang dalam dengan deskripsi yang kaya (thick description), penelitian ini memanfaatkan metode penelitian kualitatif. Kata Kunci: Harmoni – Perdamaian – Konflik – Lokal - Pemerintah
