The electrochemical kinetic behavior of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on PdPt alloy nanocubes of various compositions is investigated in 0.1 M KOH and 0.1 M HClO4 solutions, adopting the rotating disk electrode (RDE) configuration. The PdPt nanocubes are prepared in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone and identified by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM images reveal that the PdPt alloy nanoparticles have a preferential cubic shape and the average particle size is approximately 8–10 nm. CO‐stripping and cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments are used for electrochemical cleaning and characterization of metal nanoparticles. The CV responses indicate alloy formation. In acidic media, Pd36Pt64 shows the highest specific activity (SA) for the ORR from the alloyed catalysts studied, but this activity is similar to that found with Pt and Pd nanocubes. However, in alkaline solution, the SA value for Pd72Pt28 is about two times higher than that of Pd and Pt nanocubes. The mechanistic pathway of O2 reduction on PdPt alloy nanocubes is analogous to that of pure Pd and Pt catalysts and the ORR proceeds via a 4‐electron pathway in both electrolyte solutions.

The synthesis of Pd nanocrystals of controlled size and morphology has drawn enormous interest due to their catalytic activity. We report a new and efficient strategy for the one-step synthesis of monodispersed Pd nanocubes with ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonate (EDTMP) as a complex-forming and capping agent. The morphology, structure, and growth mechanism of the Pd nanocubes were fully characterized via selected area electron diffraction (SAED), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the morphology of the Pd nanocrystals in the proposed EDTMP-PdCl 2 system could be changed from octahedrons to nanocubes simply by adjusting the amount of iodide used during synthesis. After UV/ozone and electrochemical cleaning, the as-prepared Pd nanocubes demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability during formic acid oxidation, owing to their abundant {100} facets and small particle size.

The aims of this study are to synthesize porous nanostars (PNSs) composed of a Pt, Pd, or Pt–Pd alloy shell supported on a gold core and to demonstrate their improved electrocatalytic activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The catalysts contain homogeneous, porous, star‐shaped, large‐sized structures (50 or 20 nm on average), with a covering pattern of Pt or Pt–Pd alloy nanodendritic particles of up to 5 nm. The synthesized PNS catalysts catalyze the ORR effectively, offering high performance in terms of Pt group metals mass‐specific activity, electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), specific ECSA, and specific activity, with high half‐wave potential values (0.93–0.96 V).
