Aquaculture production as an important source of protein for our diet is sure to continue in the coming years. However, marine pollution will also likely give rise to serious problems for the food safety of molluscs. Seafood is widely recognized for its high nutritional value in our diet, leading to major health benefits. However, the threat of marine pollution including heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants and other emerging pollutants is of ever-growing importance and seafood safety may not be guaranteed. New approaches for the search of biomarkers would help us to monitor pollutants and move towards a more global point of view; protocols for the aquaculture industry would also be improved. Rapid and accurate detection of food safety problems in bivalves could be carried out easily by protein biomarkers. Hence, proteomic technologies could be considered as a useful tool for the discovery of protein biomarkers as a first step to improve the protocols of seafood safety. It has been demonstrated that marine pollutants are altering the bivalve proteome, affecting many biological processes and molecular functions. The main response mechanism of bivalves in a polluted marine environment is based on the antioxidant defense system against oxidative stress. All these proteomic data provided from the literature suggest that alterations in oxidative stress due to marine pollution are closely linked to robust and confident biomarkers for seafood safety.

“…Further, fish samples of the black sea, Bulgaria [63], local feral fish in three Gorges River, China [64], and fishes obtained from Korean markets [65] were reported to contain a toxic amount of PCBs. To evaluate contamination by PCBs in a tropical bay exposed to different anthropogenic pressures, samples of bivalves: clams (Anomalocardia brasiliana), mangrove mussel (Mytella guyanensis), and mangrove oyster (Crassotrea rhizophorae), were collected from different parts of Brazil, Bahia, Todos os Santos Bay, and the results showed that highest concentrations of PCBs being detected in mangrove oyster, followed by clams and mangrove mussel [66]. In meat samples obtained in Italy, PCBs were detected with an abundance of lower chlorinated congeners and were predicted to be highly carcinogenic to people residing in that area [67].…”

Organic pollutants are continuously disrupting the equilibrium of nature. Polychlorinated Biphenyls are a member of the broad family of man-made organic chemicals well-known as chlorinated hydrocarbons. Due to their chemical stability, high boiling point and electrical insulating properties, non-flammability, Polychlorinated Biphenyls are used in various commercial as well as industrial applications. Polychlorinated Biphenyls residues remain in the ecosystem and bioaccumulate in various organisms due to their persistent nature and resistance against natural breakdown agents. This leads to the enlisting of approximately 209 chlorinated congeners in the list of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention. Their residues have been detected in various environmental components even though their production has been banned for more than a decade. High residues of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in water bodies, aquatic faunas, soils and sediments, air, and biota samples have been reported. Therefore, the current review aims at depicting the source and dynamics of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in the environment as well as the exploitation of various detection tools for the analysis of Polychlorinated Biphenyls. Besides, it provides a critical description of worldwide contamination scenarios of Polychlorinated Biphenyls and the need for further advancement in the detection and extensive identification.

Los bifenilos policlorados (PCBs) son contaminantes persistentes que afectan enormemente a los ecosistemas marinos. Utilizando técnicas de aprendizaje de máquina, se construyeron modelos de relación cuantitativa estructura-actividad (RCEA) para predecir el factor de bioconcentración (BCF) de los PCBs. Estos modelos se construyeron a partir de descriptores topográficos 2D y 3D calculados para la estructura molecular optimizada en el nivel de mecánica molecular. Después de analizar sus parámetros estadísticos, se determinó que dos modelos son bastante robustos para la predicción de logBCF. Los modelos seleccionados fueron: M_4_LR construido con dos descriptores moleculares y presenta valores de r2 = 0,9154, Q2LOO = 0,8944, y Q2ext = 0,9119, y M_13 construido con cuatro descriptores moleculares y presenta valores de r2 = 0,9375, Q2LOO = 0,9155, y Q2ext = 0,844. Los dos modelos pasaron la doble fase de validación y cumplieron con los criterios de la prueba de Tropsha. Esto implica que las predicciones para el logBCF fueron bastante precisas tal como se muestra en los resultados del presente estudio.
