PCBs and PCDD/FS in Fish and Fish Products and Their Impact on the Human Body Burden in Belgium

Abstract: The concentrations of marker PCBs (28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180) in fish have been assessed with GC-MS: an average concentration of 540 ng-PCB g(-1) fat (5.02 ng-PCB g(-1) wet weight) was observed. The average concentration of PCDD/Fs, assessed with the CALUX bioassay, amounted to 64 pg-CALUX-TEQ g(-1) fat (0.58 pg-CALUX-TEQ g(-1) wet weight) and that of PCDD/Fs + dioxin-like PCBs amounted to 131 pg-CALUX-TEQ g(-1) fat (1.18 pg-CALUX-TEQ g(-1) wet weight). Results of the PCB congeners analyses show that PCB… Show more

“…In aquatic organisms, most information about PCB substances is related to muscles of fish and fish-eating birds Baeyens et al 2007;Sagerup et al 2009), and very few data are available regarding PCB content in other organs. Only recently, more attention has been paid to a tissue-specific PCB distribution in fish (Monosson et al 2003).…”

“…For Belgium, several intake assessments of dioxin-like substances are available, based on different food consumption and contamination data and using different methods to combine both in order to estimate the intake (Focant et al, 2002;Vrijens et al, 2002;De Bont et al, 2004;Baeyens et al, 2007). A detailed intake assessment was performed in the aftermath of the 1999 PCB incident by Vrijens et al (2002).…”

“…In aquatic organisms, most studies have reported on PCBs in the muscles of fish (Baeyens et al, 2007, Kočan et al, 2001. While industries are a key component of the country's economy, little research has been conducted on PCB contamination and no literature is available for PCB analysis in different organs of fish from the North End Lake.…”
