PCBs and PAHs in sea-surface microlayer and sub-surface water samples of the Venice Lagoon (Italy)

Abstract: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are two classes of micropollutants intensively monitored and regulated due to their toxicity, persistency and wide diffusion. Their concentrations have been investigated in sea-microlayer (SML) and sub-surface water (SSW) samples collected at two sites of the Venice Lagoon, a fragile ecosystem highly influenced by industrial and anthropogenic emissions. The total P PCB concentration varies from 0.45 ng/l to 2

“…Indeed, the concentrations of PBC in ULW (average of 11.3 µmol C L While this study is unique in determining the concentrations of BC in the SML, the occurrence and accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the SML have been reported in several studies. The SML is known to accumulate atmospheric PAHs (Cincinelli et al, 2001;Wurl and Obbard, 2004;Manodori et al, 2006;Guitart et al, 2007;Lim et al, 2007;Stortini et al, 2009). Because PAHs are intrinsic to the composition of BC (Akhter et al, 1984(Akhter et al, , 1985Sergides et al, 1987), the high concentration of PAHs observed in the SML is consistent with BC being enriched at the air-sea interface.…”

“…Bulk atmospheric deposition of PCB-180 and OCDD/F (wet and dry deposition of gas and particulate phases) was estimated as the geometric mean of gas-phase concentrations measured at two locations in segments 3 and 6 every 15 days from March 2002 to June 2003 when winds exceeded 1 m s À 1 (Gambaro et al, 2004;Manodori, 2006). We assumed a dry deposition velocity of 0.003 m s À 1 , an aerosol density of 1500 kg m À 3 , and total suspended particle concentration (TSP) of 20 mg m À 3 (Mackay et al, 2001).…”

“…Currently, the screen [11], the rotating drum [12], the glass plate [13], and Teflon plate methods are the most widely used [4]. The Multi-Use Microlayer Sampler (MUMS) [5][6][7][14][15][16] was used to collect SML and SSW samples simultaneously. This device consists of a radio controlled floating structure which can collect SML and SSW at the same time.…”
