Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer in Alcohol Dependence: A Pilot Study

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Pavlovian processes are thought to play an important role in the development, maintenance and relapse of alcohol dependence, possibly by influencing and usurping ongoing thought and behavior. The influence of pavlovian stimuli on ongoing behavior is paradigmatically measured by pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) tasks. These involve multiple stages and are complex. Whether increased PIT is involved in human alcohol dependence is uncertain. We therefore aimed to establish and validate a modifi… Show more

“…These data combine to suggest that NAc core dopamine signaling is an important substrate for allows cues to motivate behavior, but only when this is adaptive. Because this motivational influence can be disrupted in the addicted state in both non-human, drug-exposure models (LeBlanc et al 2013, Leblanc et al 2013, Wyvell & Berridge 2001, Taylor & Jentsch 2001, Glasner et al 2005, Ostlund et al 2014) and in human addicts (Garbusow et al 2014, Martinovic et al 2014, Hogarth et al 2014), these results have implications for the understanding and treatment of addiction and other disorders of behavioral control.…”

“…Direct evidence that stimulus influences exemplified by transfer can contribute to maintaining unwanted actions, such as drug use, comes from recent reports that the strength of transfer effects may be an indicator of relapse risk (Garbusow et al 2014(Garbusow et al , 2015. In these studies, recently detoxified alcoholics showed a stronger transfer effect than healthy controls.…”
