There are many features for road pavements, in which the most significant feature is skid resistance. Skid resistance is referred to as the contact (friction) among the pavement surface and automobile tires. Essentially, this feature is vital to guarantee adequate road secureness and it takes a fundamental part during specific climatic conditions. The aim of this research is targeted at distinguishing the primary attributes that impact skid resistance, so that the rates of traffic collisions that occur as a result of insufficient skid resistance specifically in wet climate conditions, are minimized. Throughout this research, designs to calculate the association of surface texture form, automobile velocity, tire type and the type of asphalt mixture on skid resistance were created and applied to evaluate the significance of each attribute as well as enhancing the secureness of roads. Hence, the attributes influencing skid resistance were chosen and evaluated utilizing the SPSS program. Also, the British Pendulum Skid Resistance Tester was utilized in order to evaluate the skid resistance of various surface textures. The outcomes obtained by this study proved that there is a strong association among surface texture, wheel form, type of mixture and automobile velocity, where R2 =96.5%. Moreover, the outcomes advocated the necessity of applying operating method designs to minimize duration and exertion as well as computing the influence of these attributes on skid resistance. The ingenuity of this research is in its concept which advocates that the manipulation of skid resistance operation method results in enhanced road security and minimizes collisions, which respectively diminishes fatality rates.

Pavement skid resistance impacts road functionality and can affect user safety and vehicle operation costs. This study was an investigation of the effect of sealcoats on skid resistance. Seven different sealcoats-fog seal, chip seal, slurry seal, sand seal, high-friction seal, cape seal, and glass seal-were lab and field tested. Laboratory samples were further tested in the field on pavement sections. To validate lab and field tests, high-friction seal was tested on recently placed pavement sections in Anchorage, Alaska. The British Pendulum tester was used to measure sealcoat skid resistance. A minimum of 40 randomized readings from the lab and field were sorted. Statistical analysis of lab and field data showed insignificant differences between all sealcoat types with the exception of cape seal. The mean skid resistance of sealcoats indicated a preference for highfriction and glass seals. On average, high-friction and glass seals had skid numbers close to 40, providing effective skid resistance as well as safer riding quality. The field and lab data of high-friction sealcoat were validated on recently paved roads in Anchorage. The results highlighted the consistency of skid resistance measurements for the three types of testing conditions (lab, field, and real roadway) for high-friction sealcoat.

Sufficient pavement skid resistance is one of the essential factors to ensure traffic safety. The real contact area (Ar) between the tire and road is significant for understanding and improving the skid resistance performance. In this study, the tire–road contact area is measured by squeezing a smooth underside-dyed rubber block into the specimens, using a self-designed fixture mounted on the universal test machine. The three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is used to separate the specimens with multi-scale roughness. Surface texture on 29 AC pavements is obtained by a 3D scanner and qualified by the root-mean-square surface height (Sq), to investigate the impact of pavement texture on the Ar. The skid resistance on 23 AC road sections is measured using the T2GO system, and the pavement texture is recorded, to discuss the influence of the Ar on the skid resistance. The results indicate that the multi-scale roughness rarely affects the measured contact area once the concerned wavelength is less than 0.6 mm. The Ar decreases with the Sq following a power function but has weak correlation with the friction coefficient. This study could provide an in-depth understanding of the tire–road contact and lays a foundation for optimizing the contact-related pavement performance.
