The practice of academic cheating is one of the biggest scandals in the educational process at various universities throughout Indonesia. This study aims to elaborate on the issue from Michael Sandel's philosophical criticism of the tyranny of meritocracy and the reproduction ofeducational inequality. The research uses the literature review research method, which is carried out by identifying, analyzing, and interpreting Sandel's works critically, especially his book, The Tyranny of Merit: What Becomes the Common Good? The results of this study indicate that academic cheating in university is not only the result of personal academic incompetence or degradation of personal moral integrity but mainly the result of the educational system and paradigm that exalts and adores meritocracy. Under the tyranny of meritocracy, the academicians concentrate on pursuing academic titles and individual pride rather than being an organic and humanistic intellectual. It can be concluded that under meritocracy, the education system fails to implement its humanistic and liberating role and instead reproduces the new social inequality and oppression. This research has implications for the revitalization of education’s role as an agent of liberation, equality, and justice in Indonesia.

Rantau Baru Village is a fishermen's traditional village located on the banks of the Kampar River. Because of the fish season and declining fish population, the fishermen's economy is currently unstable. In addition, the natural disasters caused by massive floods in the last 10 years, specifically also affected the fisherman's welfare. This study aimed to evaluate the ecological, social, and economic aspects of Rantau Baru Village before formulating an ecosocio-educational model in environmental management for the local fishing community. The research was performed through field observation and interviews. Eco-socio-education sustainability in environmental management was analyzed based on the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) approach using the Rapid Assessment Technique for Fisheries (RAPFISH) program. An eco-socio-educational model was based on important variables in the Leverage of Attributes analysis. The eco-socio-educational model applied to environmental aspects, namely forest reforestation counseling, landscape rehabilitation, and environmentally friendly fishing gear; to social aspects, namely healthy living behavior, education on types of diseases, improvement of health facilities such as the provision of clean water, drinking water, and adequate public sanitation; to economic aspects, training and mentoring to business actors or micro small and medium enterprises, starting to introduce the development of ecotourism and fisheries tourism.

Critical pedagogy is a pedagogical philosophy and social movement founded on the notion of critical social theories and paradigms. Critical pedagogy encompasses a wide range of topics, including future and hope. Whilst developing educational programs, implementing pedagogies, and responding to humanitarian crises, critical pedagogy becomes a basis for examining deep-seated values, beliefs and assumptions that might otherwise challenge empowering, equitable and socially just educational and social systems (Luitel & Dahal, 2020). Such a process is, without doubt, an important component of renewing education and culture. Politics is at the heart of critical pedagogy (McLaren & Leonard, 1993). Hence, in this editorial, we attempt to highlight critical pedagogy: future and hope of the Freirean concepts of critical pedagogy (1921-1997). Education as “Banking”, liberatory pedagogy, education is political, critical pedagogy is not Eidos, pedagogy of hope, critical reflection as/for conscientization, critical pedagogy in the classroom and research with people instead of research on people are some of the key ideas that are discussed in this editorial. Our editorial concludes with a brief summary of the original articles that are covered in this issue.
