Paul Trapping of RadioactiveHe+6Ions and Direct Observation of TheirβDecay

Abstract: We demonstrate that abundant quantities of short-lived beta unstable ions can be trapped in a novel transparent Paul trap and that their decay products can directly be detected in coincidence. Low energy 6He+ (807 ms half-life) ions were extracted from the SPIRAL source at GANIL, then decelerated, cooled, and bunched by means of the buffer gas cooling technique. More than 10(8) ions have been stored over a measuring period of six days, and about 10(5) decay coincidences between the beta particles and the 6Li++… Show more

“…Since this measurement records the position and energy of the β particle and the position and time-of-flight of the 6 Li recoils detected in coincidence with the β particles, the kinematics is over determined allowing the construction of the neutrino invariant mass [75] and enabling the control of background and instrumental effects. Three data production runs have been completed with this setup including a measurement of the shake-off probability of the singly bound electron in the recoiling ions following β decay [76].…”

“…Such studies have recently made significant progress with the advent of improved trapping techniques [3,4]. These sophisticated setups allow the production of β-decay sources almost at rest and confined in small volumes that can be surrounded by suitable detectors [5,6]. We describe here the achievements made with the LPCTrap setup installed at GANIL 1 .…”

“…Ion traps are applied at GANIL for measuring the νβ-correlation in 6 He [196,197] and at ISOLDE, CERN for that in the decay of 35 Ar [198]. A linear Paul trap is used in the GANIL experiment, and coincidences between beta-particles and recoil daughter ions are detected similar to the laser trap experiments for neutral atoms.…”
