Macrofungal diversity in Colombian Amazon forests varies with regions and regimes of disturbance

Here we present the results of fungal biodiversity studies from some selected Colombian Amazon forests in relationship to plant biodiversity and successional stages after slash and burn agriculture. Macrofungal diversity was found to differ between forests occurring in two regions (Araracuara vs Amacayacu) as well as between flooded forests and terra firme forests in the Amacayacu region. Macrofungal biodiversity differed between regeneration states of different age in the Araracuara region. Suitable substrates, especially dead wood that occurred as a result of recent slash and burn agriculture, resulted in the formation of many sporocarps of wood-inhabiting species. Putative ectomycorrhizal species were found in a dipterocarp forest. Fifty two percent of the macrofungal species could not be identified to the species level, but could be assigned to a genus, and it is likely that a significant portion of these represent species new to science. Long term studies are needed to obtain a comprehensive and complete understanding of the diversity and functioning of mycobiota in Amazon forest ecosystems.

-(Floristic and phytosociological characterization of the arboreal and shruby stratum of a swamp forest in Rio Claro (SP), Brazil). The flora and structure of a swamp forest occurring in a declivity in the municipality of Rio Claro, SP, was characterized in order to compare its floristic composition with other swamp forests in the countryside of São Paulo state. The trees (CBH ≥15 cm) were censused in 45 plots of 10 m × 10 m (0.45 ha). A total of 1,651 living plants in 49 species and 30 families were found. The diversity index (H') for species was 2.10 nats.individual -1 , whereas the equability (J) was 0.54. The most important species (IV) were Euterpe edulis Mart., Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess., Talauma ovata A. St.-Hill., Cedrela odorata L., Dendropanax cuneatum Decne & Planch., and Protium spruceanum (Benth.) Engl. The high number of species found in this study can be related with different flooding intensities through the declivity, whereas the low floristic diversity was associated with a high relative density of few species, e.g. E. edulis (41%). The floristic comparison between swamp forests showed that: i) Calophyllum brasiliense, Cedrela odorata, Dendropanax cuneatum, Protium almecega, Styrax pohlii A. DC., Talauma ovata, and Tapirira guianensis Aubl. compose an important group of dominating species that determine a structural resemblance between the swamp forests in the countryside of São Paulo state; ii) the flora of these forests is very variable, with a large number of exclusive species in only one forest. The results indicates that each fragment of swamp forest besides being very important for occurrence of the populations associated to hidromorphic soils and presents floristic peculiarities that altogether, in a high scale, improve the great diversity.Key words -floristic, phytosociology, swamp forest, tropical forest RESUMO -(Caracterização florística e fitossociológica do componente arbustivo-arbóreo de uma floresta paludosa no Município de Rio Claro (SP), Brasil). As florestas paludosas ocupam geralmente porções planas de várzeas e fundos de vale. Caracterizou-se a flora e a estrutura de uma floresta paludosa estabelecida sobre um declive acentuado no Município de Rio Claro, SP, visando à comparação florística dessa floresta com outras florestas paludosas estudadas no interior do Estado de São Paulo. Os indivíduos (PAP ≥ 15 cm) foram amostrados em 45 parcelas de 10 m × 10 m (0,45 ha). Foram encontrados 1.651 indivíduos vivos, pertencentes a 49 espécies e 30 famílias. -(Diversity and structure of the tree community of a fragment of tropical secondary forest of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest domain 15 and 40 years after logging). Two adjacent tracts of tropical secondary forest, situated in Itambé do Mato Dentro, south-eastern Brazil, which had been regenerating for 15 and 40 years after clearing, were compared with the purpose of detecting differences in species diversity and composition, species guild composition (regeneration, stratification and dispersion), and stand structure. Four and three 1,125 m 2 plots laid on the 15-and 40-year-old stands, respectively, sampled 2,430 trees with diameter at the base of the stem ≥ 5 cm. The number of species (S = 199) was high for this forest type and significantly higher for the older stand. Tree density was significantly higher in the younger stand, particularly for smaller trees, whereas the two stands did not differ in both basal area and volume per hectare. Trees of shade-tolerant and understory species were significantly more abundant in the older stand. Though sharing a large proportion of species (49%), the two stands differed significantly in the abundance of many species. Live stumps probably contributed to the relatively quick restoration of some forest characteristics, particularly species diversity, basal area and volume.Key words -Brazilian Atlantic forest, forest regeneration, succession, tropical secondary forest RESUMO -(Diversidade e estrutura da comunidade arbórea de um fragmento de floresta tropical secundária do domínio da Floresta Atlântica 15 e 40 anos após o corte). Dois trechos adjacentes de floresta secundária, situados em Itambé do Mato Dentro, MG, e que estiveram em regeneração por 15 e 40 anos depois do corte foram comparados com o propósito de detectar diferenças em diversidade e composição de espécies, composição de guildas (regeneração, estratificação e dispersão) e estrutura do povoamento. Quatro e três parcelas de 1.125 m 2 foram distribuídas nos povoamentos de 15 e 40 anos de idade, respectivamente, e amostraram 2.430 árvores com diâmetro na base do tronco ≥ 5 cm. O número de espécies (S = 199) foi alto para essa tipologia florestal e significativamente maior para o povoamento mais velho. A densidade de árvores foi significativamente mais alta no povoamento mais jovem, particularmente para árvores menores, ao passo que os dois povoamentos não diferiram em área basal e volume por hectare. Árvores de espécies tolerantes à sombra e de espécies de subbosque foram significativamente mais abundantes no povoamento mais velho. Apesar de compartilharem uma grande proporção de espécies (49%) os dois povoamentos diferiram significativamente quanto à abundância de muitas espécies. As cepas das árvores provavelmente contribuíram para a relativamente rápida restauração de algumas características da floresta, particularmente diversidade de espécies, área basal e volume.Palavras-chave -Floresta Atlântica, floresta secundária tropical, regeneração florestal, sucessão
