Patterns of Injury Associated With Routine Childhood Falls

Abstract: In children who presented to a children's hospital emergency department with a fall, fall from an object was the most common type. Those younger than 2 years, most commonly fell from a bed/chair and sustained head injury. Children 5 to 12 years old were likely to fall from playground equipment and fracture their arm. These findings may be helpful to clinicians who evaluate routine childhood falls.

“…4,[9][10][11] Among the youngest group, head trauma was the most frequent type of injury sustained during falls, similar to research in other countries. 11 Head trauma is particularly troubling, as demonstrated by a study in Bangladesh that found falls were the leading cause of disability for different durations, including permanent disability. 12 This study identified three specific target areas for interventions (Table V) -recreation, furniture and the physical environment-and prevention messages could be structured around this conceptual map.…”

“…A study in South Delhi noted that roofs, balconies, and furniture were the most common fall sites, while another study in USA stated that falls from stairs and playgrounds were the most frequent fall sites [7,8,22,23]. In studies performed in the eastern regions, it was shown that about half of the cases had fallen from roofs; stairs were in second place [3,24].…”
