BackgroundThe use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widespread among children in Germany and other European countries. Only a few studies are available on trends in pediatric CAM use over time. The study’s objective was to present updated results for prevalence, predictors, and costs of CAM use among German children and a comparison with findings from a previous follow-up of the same birth cohort.MethodsData were collected for 3013 children on their utilization of medicinal products (during the last 4 weeks) and consultation with CAM providers (in the preceding year) from a German birth cohort study (GINIplus, 15-year follow-up) using a self-administered questionnaire. The reported medicinal CAMs were classified into six categories (homeopathy, herbal drugs, nutritionals, minerals and trace elements, microorganisms, further CAM). Drug prices were traced using pharmaceutical identification numbers (PZNs), or otherwise conservatively estimated. Finally, the results were compared with data obtained from the 10-year follow-up of the same birth cohort study by adopting the identical methodology.ResultsIn all, 26% of the reported 2489 drugs were medicinal CAM. The 4-week prevalence for homeopathy and herbal drug use was 7.5% and 5.6%, respectively. Some 13.9% of the children used at least one type of medicinal CAM in the preceding 4 weeks. The 1-year prevalence for consultation with CAM providers was 10.8%. From the drugs identified as CAM, 53.7% were homeopathic remedies, and 30.8% were herbal drugs.Factors associated with higher medicinal CAM use were female gender, residing in Munich, and higher maternal education.A homeopathy user utilized on average homeopathic remedies worth EUR 15.28. The corresponding figure for herbal drug users was EUR 16.02, and EUR 18.72 for overall medicinal CAM users.Compared with the 10-year follow-up, the prevalence of homeopathy use was more than halved (−52%) and dropped substantially for herbal drug use (−36%) and overall CAM use (−38%) as well.ConclusionCAM use among 15-year-old children in the GINIplus cohort is popular, but decreased noticeably compared with children from the same cohort at the age of 10 years. This is possibly mainly because German health legislation normally covers CAM for children younger than 12 years only.

The Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) have been increasingly used by patients such as children and adolescents. The Ministry of Health in Chile (MINSAL) has recognized and regulated some CAM, although there is still unknown their effectiveness and safety of these. Objective: Review the available evidence regarding the use of CAM in adolescents with the attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome (ADHD) and mood disorders. Methodology: A review of the related literature about this topic on PubMed, focus on the last 10 years and using as a keywords Complementary/Alternative Medicine/Therapies, Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity, Mood disorders, and Children/Adolescents. The revision was also complemented with other sources of information. Results: Globally there has been a progressive increase in publications in relation to the CAM. However, not all studies follow a good methodology and the majority of the studies in adolescents show inconclusive results. The ADHD studies have shown benefits when using omega 3 fatty acids. Regarding other CAM and ADHD, the evidence does not show any favorable results beyond placebo. Though some of these studies have methodological mistakes or lack of enough studies, making it impossible to have conclusive. In mood disorders, there are several promising therapies, such as: physical exercise, light therapy, St. John's Wort and some kinds of meditation like Mindfulness. In Chile, there are still no studies in this age group, which makes important the development of a line of research in this area.

OriginalUso y actitudes frente a los medicamentos naturales y homeopáticos en pacientes pediátricos: una encuesta entre médicos colombianos R E S U M E NAntecedentes: El uso de la medicina complementaria y alternativa (MCA) ha ido en aumento en todo el mundo, no solo en adultos, sino también en niños. A pesar del fuerte interés en la MCA, existe poca información publicada sobre su uso en la práctica clínica, especialmente para países no angloparlantes y para población pediátrica.Objetivos: Para comprender mejor el uso, el conocimiento y la actitud de los médicos con respecto a los medicamentos naturales y la homeopatía, se llevó a cabo una encuesta internacional con participación de pediatras y médicos generales que atienden pacientes pediátricos en seis países: Alemania, Rusia, Bulgaria, España, Colombia e Israel. En el presente trabajo, se analizan los datos asociados a Colombia y se comparan con los resultados generales.Método: La encuesta internacional fue realizada mediante en varis paises. Los datos fueron recolectados entre mayo y junio del 2014 mediante un cuestionario en línea estructurado y dirigido a pediatras y médicos generales que atienden niños.Resultados: En Colombia, un total de 51 médicos participaron en la encuesta: el 80% de los encuestados eran pediatras y el 20% eran médicos generales o médicos de atención primaria.El 12.7% de las prescripciones y/o recomendaciones pediátricas analizadas en el estudio estaban relacionadas con preparados homeopáticos, y el 8.6% estaban relacionadas con la fitoterapia. Los medicamentos naturales y la homeopatía comúnmente se usan junto con los fármacos convencionales/tradicionales. Las enfermedades más comunes tratadas con homeopatía fueron infecciones del tracto respiratorio superior (42%), alergias (39%), infecciones recurrentes (35%), trastornos del sueño (32%), problemas abdominales agudos (26%), cólico infantil (23%) y problemas de comportamiento (19%). Los pacientes típicos tratados con medicamentos naturales eran niños con padres preocupados por los efectos secundarios de los medicamentos convencionales (30%) y quienes optaban por el uso de * Autor para correspondencia.
