Patterns of Auditory Processing and Articulation Deficits in Academically Deficient Juvenile Delinquents

Abstract: Auditory processing deficits and articulation disorders were studied in a group of male juvenile delinquents. Significant auditory processing deficits were frequently observed and were significantly related to underachievement in reading, spelling, and arithmetic. In addition, articulation disorders were present in over 60% of the delinquent subjects. The results are interpreted to indicate that the evaluation of speech capabilities and auditory processing skills should be an integral part of treatment program… Show more

“…The notion of such a relationship is supported by several studies highlighting children who present with symptoms of behavioral disorders display comorbid sensory or sensory-related deficits (Love and Thompson 1988;Mangeot et al 2001;Pearson et al 1991;Sigmundsson 2003;Swaab-Barneveld et al 2000;WarrLeeper et al 1994;Zinkus and Gottlieb 1983).…”

“…For example, research by Swaab- Barneveld et al (2000) assessed visual processing in children with ADHD, ODD, and CD and found that all three psychiatric groups showed more visual attention deficits and lower perceptual sensitivity than the control group. Furthermore, children with ODD and other behavior problems displayed higher levels of auditory processing deficits than controls (Pearson et al 1991;Zinkus and Gottlieb 1983).…”

“…In addition, many parents may not be aware of the expected timing of developmental milestones (e.g., the age at which a child should be able to speak in three-word sentences or negotiate two-step commands) (Cox & Rutter, 1985). Fortunately, there are developmental variables that correlate with language delay and can be more reliably recalled, such as prematurity, low birth weight (Rutter & Martin, 1972), and recurrent otitis media (Zinkus & Gottlieb, 1983). Also, it is possible to gain knowledge about the child's acquisition of language indirectly by investigating the coincident use of language in other areas of development, such as entrance to preschool or kindergarten and games with other children.…”

“…It is important that an adolescent's peers model cooperative behaviour as well as adults. Research also indicates that children and adolescents with behavioural disorders more often have language disorders than the normative population (Mack and WarrLeeper, 1992; Zinkus and Gottlieb, 1983). It is important that an SLP be prepared to focus on the behavioural disorder as well as on the language deficiency.…”
