Patterns in size and species diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in Mediterrannean salt marshes

Abstract: Mediterranean salt marsh macroinvertebrate assemblages are abiotically filtered due to harsh environmental conditions. We hypothesized that in these environmentally fluctuating systems, biotic interactions would have more relevance than abiotic ones and that size-based interactions would dominate. The manuscript focuses on the response to biotic and abiotic factors of 2 diversity metrics: (1) one that relies on species identity (Shannon-Wiener diversity), and (2) another based on the shape of biomass size spec… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the cited studies were mainly focused on planktonic organisms. In contrast, a previous study analyzing macroinvertebrate predation effect on the benthic community (Gascón et al 2009) found similar results to the ones reported in the current study. Another plausible explanation is that vegetation acts as a refuge for invertebrates against visual predators such as fish (Cook & Streams 1984).…”

“…Ye et al (2013) also found a positive relationship between zooplankton size diversity and the zooplankton:phytoplankton biomass ratio. Other studies have reported size diversity to be positively related to nutrient scarcity in benthic invertebrate communities (Gascón et al 2009). Moreover, Emmrich et al (2011) found higher fish size diversity values in lakes with lower nutrient concentrations.…”

“…Size diversity has been applied in the analysis of size-based organization of communities, including effects of predation on prey size distribution (Compte et al 2010(Compte et al , 2011(Compte et al , 2012Rudolf 2012;Ye et al 2013;Quintana et al 2015;Sorf et al 2015;Tavşano glu et al 2015), responses to environmental biotic or abiotic gradients at local or global scale (Badosa et al 2007;Gasc on et al 2009;Ruh ı et al 2009;Brucet et al 2010;Schartau et al 2010;Emmrich et al 2011;Arranz et al 2015;Benejam et al 2015) and seasonal dynamics or successional patterns after disturbances Paredes and Montecino 2011). Size-based approaches have also been used for the establishment of the ecological status in aquatic ecosystems (Gallardo et al 2011;Basset et al 2012).…”
