Patterns in artisanal coral reef fisheries reveal best practices for monitoring and management

Abstract: Sustainable fisheries management is key to restoring and maintaining ecological function and benefits to people, but it requires accurate information about patterns in resource use, particularly fishing pressure. In most coral reef fisheries and other data-poor contexts, obtaining such information is challenging and remains an impediment to effective management. We developed the most comprehensive regional view of shore-based fishing effort and catch for the Hawaiian Islands to show detailed fishing patterns f… Show more

“…Geologically younger and located in the rain shadows of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea mountains, Ka‘ūpūlehu is very dry and minimally eroded, resulting in poorly developed ephemeral stream channels and large SGD [ 55 , 60 ]. At Hā‘ena, fishing pressure was relatively lower than Ka‘ūpūlehu prior to the establishment of the marine closures ( Fig 1C ) [ 65 ].…”

“…Total shore fishing effort values were obtained from Delaney et al. () and compared to derived spear fishing effort maps based on the sum of grid cell values within polygons representing each survey area. Empirical boat based fishing effort estimates were not available for comparison.…”
