Patterns and temporal trends of comorbidity among adult patients with incident cardiovascular disease in the UK between 2000 and 2014: A population-based cohort study

Abstract: BackgroundMultimorbidity in people with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is common, but large-scale contemporary reports of patterns and trends in patients with incident CVD are limited. We investigated the burden of comorbidities in patients with incident CVD, how it changed between 2000 and 2014, and how it varied by age, sex, and socioeconomic status (SES).Methods and findingsWe used the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink with linkage to Hospital Episode Statistics, a population-based dataset from 674 UK ge… Show more

“…94,95,96,97,98 Particularly compelling evidence of increasing prevalence in the UK was provided by a study of multimorbidity among 230,000 primary care patients who had a first diagnosis of CVD during the period 2000 and 2004. 99 Over this four-year period, the incidence of CVD decreased, while the prevalence of multimorbidity increased: for example, the prevalence of multimorbidity with five or more conditions quadrupled from 6% to 24%.…”

“…stroke patients commonly experience medical complications such as pneumonia, urinary infection, decubitus, falls, deep vein thrombosis, and constipation from their rehabilitation stay. these complications may disrupt rehabilitation process and have been associated with increased mortality (1)(2)(3)(4). stroke can be divided into 2 main types, which are ischaemic and hemorrhagic stroke.…”

“…The rising incidences of complex diseases and there accompanying cost burdens 1,2 are driving a shift in disease research and management from the single-disease to a broader paradigm that accommodates a patient’s overall health 2,3 . Completing this paradigm shift requires many advances including a greater understanding of the genetic aetiology of the observed multimorbidities, which remain largely unknown 4 .…”
