Pattern of uveitis in children.

Abstract: THE comparatively few accounts of uveitis in children all agree that it is uncommon (Table I). This report concerns 150 cases of uveitis starting before the age of 16 years. Most of the children were below this age when first seen; although 5 were aged between 16 and 20 and 3 were over 20, there was good documentary evidence that the uveitis had started before the age of 16. The 150 cases represent 5 per cent. of the total of 2,890 referred to the Uveitis Clinic of the Institute of Ophthalmology in the period … Show more

“…9,12,14,15 The rate of children in our uveitis population (10%) was slightly higher than most estimates from previous studies. [30][31][32] Data from referral centres revealed that anterior uveitis was the most common form of uveitis (27.8-63%), followed by posterior (9.3-38%) or panuveitis (7-38%), and intermediate uveitis (4-17%). 33 Chronic uveitis were more common than acute uveitis, and nongranulomatous uveitis occurred more frequently than did granulomatous uveitis.…”

“…In earlier studies from tertiary referral centers PU cases have been reported to comprise 13.8% to 62% of all cases (Kimura et al 1954;Perkins 1966;Kazdan et al 1967;Makley et al 1969;Pivetti-Pezzi 1996;Tugal-Tutkun et al 1996). The relative frequencies with which various forms of uveitis are seen in a tertiary referral center do not necessarily reflect the true distribution with which they are seen in the general population (McCannel et al 1996).…”

“…The preponderance of girls in children with CAU has been shown in all reported series (Perkins 1966;Key & Kimura 1975;Ohno et al 1977;Kanski & Shun Shin 1984). It is accepted that the type of CAU typically associated with JRA can occur in the absence of joint involvement, particularly in girls (Perkins 1966;Ohno et al 1977;Kanski 1981). In our material, however, the prevalence rate for idiopathic CAU did not show significant difference between girls and boys.…”
