Pattern of mtDNA Variation in Three Populations from São Tomé e Príncipe

Abstract: SummaryWe have analysed the matrilineal genetic composition of three self-reported ethnic groups from São Tomé e Príncipe (Gulf of Guinea), an African archipelago whose settlement begun in the late fifteenth century. Sequence data from the hypervariable segments I (HVS-I) and II (HVS-II) were obtained for 30 Angolares, 35 Forros and 38 Tongas. The repertory of mtDNA lineages in São Tomé e Príncipe denoted a fully African maternal pool, primarily arisen from a Central/Southwestern substratum. The absence of any… Show more

“…Considering previous studies (Mateu et al, 1997;Trovoada et al, 2001Trovoada et al, , 2004 and the present data, we conclude that STP population, despite its sub-Saharan African main input lineages, presents a relevant European genetic component, most evident on Forros.…”

“…Previous studies on mtDNA of STP population revealed that the maternal influence was almost completely of sub-Saharan origin, clearly belonging to a West African cluster (Mateu et al, 1997;Trovoada et al, 2004). A study on b-globin haplotypes and eight autosomal markers (APOA1, AT3, FY, LPL, OCA2, RB1, Sb19.3, and GC) indicated that the peopling of Sã o Tomé provided the combination of diverse African contributions and European admixture (10.7%) that emerged from the overseas population relocations promoted by the Atlantic slave trade (Tomas, 2002).…”

“…The female component of Cabinda is exclusively Sub-Saharan, whereas the Y-biallelic markers revealed a significant European male contribution. This reflects a clear bias in the admixture process towards the mating of male Europeans with female Sub-Saharan Africans, similarly to what happened with other Portuguese ex-colonies, like Mozambique(Pereira et al 2002), Cape Verde(Gon- c¸alves et al 2003), Sa˜o Tome´and Prı´ncipe(Trovoada et al 2004) or even Brazil(Carvalho-Silva et al 2001).…”

“…In studies of the populations of Cape Verde Islands [20,21] and Sao Tome Island [22,23], sex-specific genetic systems were used to elucidate both maternal and paternal origins. In the case of the Palenque, analysis of HLA autosomal markers and antigens [24,25], and recently NRY variation [26] has suggested a greater proportion of recent African descent (RAD) than other Colombian groups.…”
