Introduction: Malocclusion can cause dental caries, periodontal disease and aesthetic problems. Malocclusion is most common dentofacial abnormality found in human population. However, the awareness for orthodontic treatment is increasing. Objective: The aim of this research was to evaluate pattern of malocclusion in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment at Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital of Biratnagar, Nepal. Methods: Two hundred and eighty preoperative study casts (2018 Jun to 2020 Jun) of orthodontic patients aged from 12-55 years were selected from 680 patient’s records of department of orthodontics of Nobel medical college teaching hospital, Biratnagar. Standard protocol of Angle’s classification of malocclusion was used to classify malocclusion and its traits were recorded. Data were entered in Microsoft Excel and descriptive statistics were calculated. Results: The prevalence of malocclusion were 59.65% (167) of Angle’s class I, 35.71% (100) of Angle’s class II and 4.64% (13) of Angle’s class III malocclusion. Among various attributes of malocclusion, deep bite was the most common trait (188, 67.14%). Increased overjet was found in 169 (60.35%) subjects. Crowding and spacing were found in 164 (58.57%), and 109 (38.92%) respectively. Conclusion: Angle’s class I malocclusion is most prevalent malocclusion seen followed by Angle’s class II and Angle’s class III.

Introduction: A desirable outcome in any treatment is patient's utmost expectation. The reasons for opting Orthodontic treatment by patients is an area of research as taking into account the reasons for seeking this treatment increases the chances for better and satisfying results. The present study was conducted to determine the reasons for seeking Orthodontic treatment by patients reporting to a tertiary care dental teaching institution in Jammu region. Material and methods: This was a questionnaire based survey performed done in the department of Orthodontics. The total sample size was 360 patients who were reporting for Orthodontic treatment to Department Of Orthodontics. All the patients were told to fill a structured questionnaire related to various reasons for seeking Orthodontic treatment. The questionnaires were given to them as hard copy. The filled questionnaires were collected and responses were tabulated and sent for statistical analysis. Results: Majority of the patients were motivated by dentist/physician/speech therapist/plastic surgeon / ENT specialist/others (83.3%) for seeking the orthodontic treatment.75% patients believed that orthodontic treatment will improve their overall dental health. A vast majority of the patients (95.2%) patients believed that orthodontic treatment will bring improvement in social and psychological well being. Most (45.2%) were not aware of the role of Orthodontic treatment in improvement of mastication. 41.4% patients believed that after the treatment it will be easy to find a job. Many (71.8%) patients were seeking orthodontic treatment for matrimonial purpose. Conclusion:The reason for seeking Orthodontic treatment by majority of the patients was, dental correction and expectation of a positive social and psychological impact after the treatment as well for matrimonial reasons. Most of the patients were not sure about the other oral health related conditions resulting from Orthodontic treatment like improvement in face, speech, mastication. Though majority of the patients were self-motivated. There is a need of more patient education about the benefits and needs of Orthodontic treatment in Jammu region.

Background: Tick-borne protozoan parasites (TBPPs) cause significant problems for domestic animals’ health in Nepal. TBPPs are routinely diagnosed by labor-intensive blood smear microscopy. In Nepal, there are some reports of Babesia and Theileria in cattle, although species identification is rarely performed. Therefore, we performed conventional nested PCR (nPCR) followed by sequence analysis to identify TBPP species infecting cattle in Nepal. Methods: One hundred and six blood samples were collected from cattle in the Kathmandu Valley. Thin blood smears were prepared for microscopic examination. Parasite DNA was extracted from the blood, and nPCR and sequencing were performed to identify the TBPPs present. Results: Among the 106 samples, 45 (42.5%) were positive for piroplasm (Babesia spp. and Theileria spp.) via microscope observation and 56 (52.8%) samples were positive via nPCR. The obtained PCR products were used for direct sequencing, and we identified the species as B. bigemina, B. bovis, T. annulate and T. orientalis. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the B. bovis, B. bigemina and T. orientalis sequences from this study belonged to each species clade. On the other hand, T. annulate was divided into two clades in the analysis, and our T. annulate sequences were also divided in these two clades. The piroplasm-positive cattle showed lower hemoglobin and red blood cells than healthy cattle. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to apply molecular detection and species determination of TBPPs in cattle in Nepal. The results of this study may be used as a starting point for the development of successful TBPP surveillance and prevention programs in Nepal.
