BackgroundHousehold surveys are crucial to get accurate information on how medicines are acquired, and used by consumers, as they provide the best evidence in the area. The objective of this study was to document household medicine storage practices in Gondar town, northwestern Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional household survey was conducted from April 5 to May 6, 2015. In the study, 809 households were surveyed from four sub-cities in the town selected through multistage sampling with 771 included in the final analysis. Data on the extent of storage, storage conditions, sources of medicines and their current status among others were collected through structured interviews and observations. The data were entered in to Epidata version 3.1, exported to and analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.ResultsOf the 771 households in the study, 44.2% stored medicines. Presence of family members with chronic illness(es) and higher levels of household incomes predicted higher likelihood of medicine storage. In the households which allowed observation of stored medicines (n = 299), a mean of 1.85 [SD = 1.09] medicines per household were found. By category, anti-infectives for systemic use (23.9%), medicines for alimentary tract and metabolism (19.2%) and those for cardiovascular system (17.7%) ranked top. Among individual medicines stored, diclofenac (10.7%), paracetamol (9.9%) and amoxicillin (8.0%) were on top of the list. Dispensaries (97.8%) and physicians (83.5%) were almost exclusive sources of medicines and advices/orders for medicines respectively. Nearly two-thirds of the medicines found were on use and a vast majority (76.5%) were stored in chests of drawers. Proportion of expired medicines was very low (3.14%).ConclusionsThe use of physicians’ and pharmacists’ advice to get medicines; use of dispensaries as principal sources, large proportion of medicines being in use and very low proportion of expiry showed good practices. However, storage places of medicines were not purpose built. Encouraging good practices through continued medicine use education and advocating appropriate medicine storage in medicine cabinets is required to improve storage conditions and consequent use of medicines.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12889-017-4152-8) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Poor drug storage at home may lead to physicochemical degradation of drugs and in further cases, irrational drug use. This study aims to investigate the tendency of inappropriate storage, the purpose and type of drugs kept at home, as well as predicted risk factors. Methods: Study involved 295 households as respondents obtained from multistage cluster sampling. Structured questionnaire was utilized to gain the data and logistic regression analyses were employed to estimate the factors association with improper storage. Results: Out of 295 respondents, 269 (91.2%) were females, unemployed (228; 77.3%), aged under 45 years old (162; 54.9%), and most had only attained secondary level of education or less (273; 92.5%). Out of 2571 drug items stored, the most common drug was analgesics (581; 22.6%). Antibiotics account for approximately ten percent item stored at home. Most of drugs kept at home were intended for future use (1265; 49.2%). There were 82 households kept ethical drugs without prescriptions. The risk of inadequate drug storage was significantly increased with older age (adjusted OR= 0.591, 95% CI 0.342-1.021, p=0.05) and employment status (adjusted OR=0.418, 95% CI 0.229-0.760, p=0.004). The average number of drugs kept at home had correlation with chronic disease treatment in the family (p=0.046) and when no children under 5 years of age (p=0.033). Conclusions: poor home drug storage require further patient education to prevent drug misuse and preserve the good quality of drugs.

Objective: Storing medications at home is a global practice. By storing medications in an appropriate and safe environment, we can prevent accidental poisoning. Information is scarce regarding the storage of different types of medications at homes in Al-Qassim region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore the types of medications stored at homes among people residing in Al-Qassim region. Methodology: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional survey conducted through the random distribution of a pre-validated structured questionnaire among the public and private sector employees and people from all walks of life above the age of 18 years in Al-Qassim region. The survey was designed electronically through Survey Monkey system and was distributed through social media. Results: A total of 708 subjects responded to the survey. Most of the responders were females (485 (68.10%)). About half of the responders were in the age group of 18-29 years (393 (58.31%)) with a significantly dominant female population as compared to males (p<0.05). The most frequently stored medications were related to headache (462 (65.25%)) and pain (445 (62.85%)). Most of the responders stored their medications in the refrigerator (467 (65.96%)) or in their bedroom (324 (45.76%)). A total of 633 medications were found to be stored at homes during this survey. The top 20 most frequently stored medications were paracetamol (266 (42.02%)) and ibuprofen (42 (6.64%)). Conclusion: The results of this study show an alarming situation about the methods of storing medication and types of medicines stored among the residents of Al-Qassim region. More and more campaigns and awareness programs should be conducted through different types of social media to educate the people regarding the appropriate methods of storing medications at home. Such awareness programs should stress more regarding safe methods of storage and spread awareness regarding how to identify the appropriate method of disposal to prevent harmful impact on the environment.
