Pattern of hepatitis virus infection among pregnant women and their newborns at the Women's Health Center of Assiut University, Upper Egypt

Abstract: Infection with HBV and/or HCV is highly prevalent among pregnant women in Upper Egypt. The rate of vertical transmission was also high. Administering hepatitis B vaccine and immunoglobulin resulted in a 92% reduction in carrier status among newborns.

“…However, there is a great controversy in studies conducted in different Arab countries concerning the impact of blood transfusion on the status of HBV infection. Studies from Egypt have reported that HBV infection was found to be associated with blood transfusion among pregnant women along with the finding that it is also associated with HBV infection in patients with chronic hematological disorders requiring frequent blood transfusions [29,95]. Several other studies have reported higher prevalence among those dependent on blood and blood products, especially when compared with reports of a decline in seroprevalence [96][97][98][99][100][101].…”

“…HBV is extensively studied in Egypt, where appreciable efforts have been made in this setting [28]. Although there is a high prevalence of HBV (6.7%) among the general population in Egypt [28], the prevalence among pregnant women is only 4% [29]. The prevalence of HBV among pregnant Sudanese women (5.6%) is comparable to the prevalence in Egyptian women [30].…”

“…18,116 Maternal and neonatal outcomes, including gestational diabetes, preterm delivery, and low birth weights, have been reported. [117][118][119][120] In addition, vertical transmission plays a major role in pediatric hepatitis C 121 ; the prevalence of mother-tochild transmission from HCV-infected women without HIV infection is an estimated 2-8%, 18,115,122,123 and 2-3 times higher in mothers co-infected with HIV. [124][125][126][127] There is currently no vaccine for hepatitis C, 15,128 and immune globulin is not effective in preventing pre-or postexposure HCV infection.…”
