Background: Psoriasis is a chronic relapsing disease necessitates long-term therapy. The disease severity, comorbidities, and access to health care determine the choice of therapy for psoriasis. The main aim of the treatment of psoriasis is to induce prolonged remission and suppress the disease as there is no cure. It is only palliative and symptomatic treatment, and the choice of treatment modality is according to the type of presentation. The various modalities of treatment available include topical therapies, systemic therapies, phototherapy, and biologics. The difference includes among clinical varieties in their presenting features, severity, natural course, and response to the treatment are responsible for variation in choice of therapy.Methods: In this descriptive study, data collected from patients diagnosed with psoriasis who were admitted in a K.S. Hegde Charitable hospital from January 2017 to January 2019 were analysed for demographic features, disease pattern and drug use pattern in patients.Results: Psoriasis vulgaris/plaque type of psoriasis was commonly observed type of psoriasis in our patients with fourth and fifth decade patients getting more affected. Diabetes was the most commonly associated comorbid disorder. The patients were treated both with systemic and topical modalities of treatment, antihistaminic and methotrexate were most commonly most commonly used systemic drug and moisturizers and glucocorticoids were used topical drugs.Conclusions: Psoriasis needs a multimodality treatment with careful monitoring for the comorbid disorder. Treatment choice is individualised depending on the severity and body parts affected.

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem disease which predominantly affects skin, joint, scalp and nail. Treatment strategies for psoriasis include topical therapy, systemic therapy and phototherapy (PT). Treatment usually depends on the severity, location and extent of lesion. Drug prescription studies are necessary for the recognition of areas for improvement and improving drug prescribing practices in hospitals. There are very few reports regarding drug prescription pattern in psoriasis patients. Hence we conducted this study.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 50 newly diagnosed psoriasis patients who attended Dermatology and Venereology outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital. The prescriptions from the patients were collected for the duration of 18 months and details of prescription were collected in case record forms. The assessment of disease severity was done by psoriasis area severity index (PASI) score.Results: Majority of the patients (46%) belonged to the age group of 41-55years. The mean age of the patients was 42.48±12.29 years. Most of the patients with mild form of psoriasis were treated with topical therapy. Topical therapy included high potency steroids alone or in combination with salicylic acid and calcipotriol. Patients with more severe form of disease received combination of topical, systemic and phototherapy. Systemic therapy included oral Methotrexate and phototherapy was given as narrow band UVB (NBUVB). Further long term study is required to for proper assessment of prescription pattern in psoriasis patients.Conclusions: Most of the patients with psoriasis can be effectively treated with topical medications, and additional systemic and/or phototherapy may be required only for severe cases.

Purpose/aim: To assess the current prescription pattern, efficacy, tolerability and impact on Quality of life(QoL) in psoriasis patients. Material: An observational, prospective study of 18 months was carried out in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Newly diagnosed patients of psoriasis, aged ≥ 18 years were included in the study. The demographic, clinical profile, psoriasis area severity index (PASI) and drug utilization were recorded. Follow up was done at 15 days interval for two and a half months. Patient’s QoL was assessed using Psoriasis Disability Index (PDI). Results: A total 100 patients were enrolled in the study. At the time of diagnosis, 43 patients had PASI score ≤10 and 57 had > 10. At the last follow up 96 patients had PASI sore ≤ 10 and 4 had > 10. Mean of QoL at the time of diagnosis was 10.43 and at the last follow up 6.1. Pre and post-treatment PASI score showed direct intermediate significant correlation with pre and post-treatment QoL score. Most frequently fixed drug combination(FDC)of steroid and keratolytic agent were prescribed followed by anti-histaminics, steroids, minerals, anti-microbial agents, emollients, vitamins, H2-blockers, immunosuppressants, and NSAIDS.WHO core indicators were used to analyse drugs prescribed. Conclusions: In this study, the treatment of psoriasis is according to the “NICE” guideline. Patient’s treatment adherence increased because of the QoL improvement. Thus, the QoL tools are important measure of patient satisfaction and treatment monitoring.
