Pattern and related factors of cognitive impairment among chronic methamphetamine users

Abstract: Cognitive impairment occurred frequently among chronic MA users. The causal relationship between cognitive impairment and MA use needs to be ascertained in longitudinal studies in future work. Our study provides evidence for the development of intervention strategies for the prevention of MA use and associated cognitive impairment. (Am J Addict 2017;26:145-151).

“…Major psychiatric and medical harms related to methamphetamine use include psychosis, agitation, severe anxiety, depression, cardiovascular issues (e.g., arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and cerebrovascular accidents), infectious diseases (e.g., HIV and hepatitis), and dental problems, all of which require interventions within various health settings. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Primary care, EDs, and other health services settings all need to maximize their ability to respond to these complex sequelae. 106 Even health services for pregnant women may need to increase their attention to the use of methamphetamine.…”

[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Drug overdose death rates involving psychostimulants increased more than 300%, from 1.2 per 100,000 in 2013 to 5.0 per 100,000 in 2019. 3 During this same period, the percentage of overdose deaths involving psychostimulants rose from 8.2% in 2013 to 22.9% in 2019, becoming the second most numerous drug class involved in overdose deaths in 2019 (after opioids as a class).…”

“…The phenomenon of increasing methamphetamine use among people using opioids is of great concern. Methamphetamine use carries its own risks, including a range of physical and mental health consequences such as psychosis and other mental disorders, cognitive and neurological deficits, cardiovascular and renal dysfunction, transmission of HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections and increased mortality . Individuals who use both opioids and methamphetamine are more likely to be homeless, inject drugs daily or more than once a day, reuse or share syringes and report a non‐fatal overdose in the past year compared to people who inject either drug alone .…”

“…METH have not only neurotoxic [71] but also neuroprotective effects [72] when low doses of METH were administered within 12 h after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rodents, which elucidates its therapeutic potential [73]. In chronic METH users, CDs occurred frequently as measured by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) [74] especially in concentration and memory [75]. A meta-analysis revealed impairment in most cognitive domains [76].…”
