BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In view of the high prevalence of pain complaints among workers in the country and their consequences in the quality of life and work, the objective of this study was to investigate the association between the perceived stress and the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms among public servants of the Federal University of Rio Grande. METHODS: Observational, transversal and quantitative study. The survey population comprised all active servants in the second semester of 2016 in any campuses of the Federal University of Rio Grande. Participants received a digital invitation to participate in the survey containing a link that would lead to the questionnaire generated by Google Docs. The questionnaire was composed of questions on demographic data, and two standardized instruments: the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and the Perceived Stress Scale. The descriptive analysis was done by absolute and relative frequency. For the bivariate analysis, it was used the Fisher's Exact test. P values were reported for the linear trend test on associations between stress and pain. RESULTS: Of the total number of eligible servants (n=717), 36.6% participated in the study. The spine was the most reported area of the body with pain symptoms in the last 12 months, and in the last seven days. The least prevalent region of pain was hips / thighs. It was observed that the greater the perceived stress, the greater was the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms. It was observed a statistically significant linear trend in almost all assessed anatomic regions. CONCLUSION: There was a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in the analyzed population, as well as a strong association between the perceived stress and the presence of these symptoms.

Disability retirement among university public servants: epidemiological profile and causes

Objective: To identify the epidemiological profi le and causes of disability pensions for university public servants. Method: A crosssectional and descriptive study, carried out with 40 retired employees due to disability of a public university. Sociodemographic, occupational and clinical data were obtained. The analyses were stratifi ed according to gender, considering a signifi cance level of 5%. Results: Disability pensions were more frequent among women (72.5%), aged up to 60 years (77.5%). Mental and behavioral disorders were mainly responsible for pensions (35%). There was a signifi cant difference between the sexes (p ≤ 0.05) for the variables: educational level, function performed by the worker and presence of dependents. Conclusion: The epidemiological profi le showed a higher frequency of female, married/stable marital status, aged between 51 and 60 years and up to 12 years of schooling. As doenças mentais e comportamentais foram as principais responsáveis pelas aposentadorias (35%). Constatou-se diferença signifi cativa entre os sexos (p ≤ 0,05) para as variáveis: escolaridade, função exercida pelo trabalhador e presença de dependentes. Conclusão: O perfi l epidemiológico mostrou maior frequência do sexo feminino, estado civil casado/união estável, com idade entre 51 e 60 anos e até 12 anos de estudo. As doenças crônicas degenerativas foram predominantes entre as causas das aposentadorias por invalidez. | Background: Disability retirement, an outcome of permanent incapacity for work, represents 14.5% of pensions granted by the Brazilian National Social Security Institute. However, there are no data available for civil servants. Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of disability retirement among employees of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) in the period from 2012 to 2016. Methods: Cross-sectional study in which we analyzed the following variables: age, sex, total working time, years of work at FIOCRUZ, position and reason for retirement as per ICD-10 codes. The significance level was set to p=0.05 and all the data are presented with 95% confidence interval. Results: The prevalence of disability retirement in the analyzed period was 113/10,000 employees. Employees granted disability retirement benefits worked about 9 years less. Odds for disability were higher for technicians (prevalence ratio-PR=6.83) and technical assistants (PR=7.67). Mental and behavioral disorders were the main reason for disability retirement (38.71%). Conclusion: Noncommunicable diseases are the main cause of disability retirement. We call the attention to the need to revise the legislation that establishes mandatory retirement after 24 months of sick leave. An interdisciplinary occupational health surveillance approach is necessary to obtain accurate knowledge of the actual situation in workplaces and of the impacts of work processes.
