Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis Increased Risk of Developing Osteoarthritis: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the risk of developing OA in patients diagnosed with RA. Methods: In this study, we presented gender, age, urbanization, occupation and, comorbidities in a RA cohort and a non-RA cohort based on number and percentage. We investigated the OA risk in patients with RA. We conducted a retrospective cohort study with a 13-year longitudinal follow-up in Taiwan. Patients who received RA diagnoses between 2000 and 2012 were enrolled in the study cohort. The non-RA cohort were 1:1 propensity s… Show more

“…The age-standardized prevalence and incidences of RA are increasing globally [ 4 ]. RA patients usually show painful symmetrical joint swelling, morning stiffness and limited functioning of the joints [ 5 ], leading to functional disability to varying degrees [ 6 ] and a decline in quality of life. The pathological process of RA involves abnormal activation and proliferation of macrophages and B and T lymphocytes, along with oxidative stress damage in human body, causing joint destruction, activating the immune system, and ultimately leading to a chronic inflammatory response [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…Third, confounders could cause potential bias. In observational studies, some residual confounders might not be adjusted as covariates (39)(40)(41). Therefore, although we have tried our best to perform sensitivity analyses in integrating evidence with critical adjustment models, confounders could still exist in observational studies and the meta-analysis based on these studies.…”

“…In the field of autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, researchers used different approaches to provide information on disease activity, comorbidities, epidemiological reports, and risk factors (4)(5)(6). Within the past 20 years, the definition criteria, diagnostic techniques, and management of pemphigoid diseases were constantly improving.…”
