Patients with celiac disease may have normal weight or may even be overweight

Abstract: In our practice, only one third of patients with CeD had low BMI. A diagnosis of CeD should not be excluded if patient has normal or high BMI.

“…In a retrospective study of 390 Israeli children recently diagnosed, with an average age of 7.1 years, an 11.8% overweight and 5.6% obesity prevalence was reported 20 . In line with these results, the CD pediatric population in Western countries shows a malnutrition prevalence between 8% and 40% 21 . The coexistence of CD and obesity has been explained by the compensation theory, according to this hypothesis, those nutrients that cannot be absorbed due to the villi atrophy in the proximal small intestine is compensated by the increase in the absorption capacity of the distal small intestine.…”

“…Celiac disease (CeD) is usually considered to lead to undernutrition and low weight both in children and adults; in recent times, however, many patients with CeD are found to be not only overweight but some even being obese. 1 In a retrospective study, we observed that 54.8% of treatment naïve patients with CeD had their BMI within normal limits, 8.1% of them, however, were either overweight or obese. 1 Numerous other and end up developing metabolic syndrome, the pathogenesis of this condition is not very clear.…”

“…The global prevalence of the disease has been shown to range from between one and two per cent, where the presentation of CD has significantly changed over the years; whereby, in the last twenty-five years, the most notable symptoms, such as malab sorption and diarrhoea have radically reduced during the onset of the disease in both children and adults, making this disease even more difficult to diagnose at the onset [14,17]. Likewise, the atypical presentation of the disease has been reported to have significantly increased [18].…”

“…Previously, the micronutrient deficiency symptoms of CD, such as anemia, meant weight loss and frail body types, however, studies are now showing more research towards overweight and obese individuals with the same micronutrient deficiencies [18]. Therefore, the continued differences in presentation or manifestation of the disease in both children and adults indicate a critical aspect in the misdiagnosis and correlation of the disease with obesity; thus, some recent studies have tried to investigate clinical presentations of the two conditions.…”
