Patients’ attitudes and beliefs to presbyopia and its correction

Abstract: Objective Presbyopia is the gradual inability to focus near objects with age. This study explores patients’ attitudes and beliefs towards presbyopia including preferred modes of near refractive correction. Methods In the United Kingdom, twenty-four volunteers completed an online questionnaire and attended a structured, recorded focus group. Participants’ age ranged between 36 and 48 years, representing a pre-presbyopic and a presbyopic population. Attitudes and beliefs … Show more

“… 76 An online survey of pre-presbyopic and presbyopic volunteers perceived comfort and convenience of their optical correction as more important than cost, with spectacles preferred over multifocal contact lenses for near vision correction. 77 Multifocal IOLs have been shown to improve patients’ quality of life, in contrast to patient satisfaction following presbyopic LASIK, which was found to be similar to reading glasses. 78…”

“…18 Most of the near visual impairment is corrected by wearing reading eyeglasses as prescribed by Optometrists/Ophthalmologists. 2,10 Besides, monovision contact lenses (one eye for distance and one for near), bifocal and multifocal contact lenses, accommodative intraocular lenses, and refractive surgery were other options of correction mechanisms. 11,19 Most studies done in different areas including Ethiopia focused on distance visual impairment, and near visual impairment was reported as presbyopia, though they are not interchangeable, rather presbyopia is a major cause of NVI.…”

“…[ 24 ] Studies on awareness about presbyopia says that almost 60% of people with presbyopia are not aware about the condition and management. [ 25 ] Hence, strategies on improving the awareness of presbyopia and demonstration of improvement in the quality of the work might improve utilization of presbyopic services and spectacles. The study has also included the individuals below 18 years of age, and among them, 7.1% (n = 220) had self-reported to have undergone an eye examination and 1.55% (n = 48) had a vision less than 6/9 logMAR.…”
