Patient weighting of importance of asthma symptoms

Abstract: Background-Quality of life measures are increasingly important in evaluating outcomes in asthma. If some asthma symptoms are more troublesome to patients than others, this may aVect their contribution to outcome measures. This study was designed to assess the relative importance of common symptoms in adults with asthma. Methods-A postal survey using conjoint analysis was performed in 272 adults attending hospital outpatient clinics with moderately severe asthma. Patients were asked to chose between "symptom sc… Show more

“…Cough as the sole respiratory symptom in patients with normal spirometry but evidence of bronchial hyperresponsiveness and who report improvement with bronchodilators or corticosteroids receive the diagnosis of cough variant asthma [41]. Cough may also be the most troublesome symptom for patients with the more typical features of asthma, including airflow obstruction and coexistent wheeze and dyspnoea [42]. This is sometimes termed ''classic'' or ''cough predominant'' asthma [43].…”

“…It has been quite commonly used in health care to understand the value of different health technologies. [6][7][8] The DCE survey presented hypothetical treatments as treatment A and B and then asked participants to decide which they preferred. The treatments had different attributes, which were selected from a review of the literature and input from expert physicians.…”

“…A small number of studies have used DCE to value health states Burr et al 2007;Hakim and Pathak 1999;Osman et al 2001;Ratcliffe et al 2009;Ryan et al 2006) but the majority of these have not anchored values on the full health-dead QALY scale. DCE values can be modelled using regression techniques such as conditional logit and probit to produce preference weights for each severity level of each dimension in the classification system, but these coefficients are expressed on a modelled latent utility value that has arbitrary anchors.…”
