Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common pathology among disorders of the peripheral nervous system related to median nerve compression. To our knowledge, there are limited data on the effect of tendon movement on median nerve compression. This study focuses on the understanding of the carpal syndrome by simulating the impact of tendons movement caused by fingers flexion by Finite Element Analysis. Therefore, such modeling is the step toward the development of a personalized technique for value determining median nerve compression. Open-source MRI of the human right hand was used to build patient-specific phalanges of the fingers. Carpal tunnel soft tissues were considered as hyper-elastic materials, while bone structures were considered as elastic ones. The final finite-element model had 40 solid bodies which contacted the joint. Results were obtained for four cases of wrist movements: finger flexion, hand flexion/extension, and wrist extension with subsequent by finger flexion. Compression of the median nerve ranged from 129 Pa to 227 Pa. The results show that compression of the median nerve occurs faster during wrist flexion than during wrist extension or finger flexion. A decrease in compression during finger flexion was noticed with wrist extension followed by finger flexion.

Instability of collapsible tubes is studied theoretically and experimentally in many papers in the context of biological applications. Up to the present day, only Newtonian fluid flows in elastic tubes have been studied. However, there are circumstances when blood, bile and other biological fluids show essentially non-Newtonian behaviour. In this paper, we re-investigate theoretically axisymmetric stability of elastic tubes conveying power-law fluids. It is shown that for the power-law index $n=1$ , i.e. for the Newtonian case, axisymmetric disturbances in infinite-length tubes are damped, which is in accordance with experimental and theoretical observations, where the oscillations always involve non-axisymmetric motion of the tube walls. However, for $n<0.611$ , the axisymmetric disturbances can be growing, which predicts a new type of instability of elastic tubes conveying pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) fluids. For $n<1/3$ , local instability of axisymmetric perturbations becomes absolute in infinite tubes, while finite-length tubes become globally unstable. The effects of the axial tension, elastic tube length and, if present, lengths of inlet and outlet rigid tubes on the stability of finite-length tubes are analysed.

The mechanics of bile flow in the biliary system plays an important role in studying bile stasis and gallstone formation. Bile duct stricture is an abnormal phenomenon that refers to the bile duct getting smaller or narrower. The main objective of this study is to study the influence of stricture on bile flow dynamics using numerical methods. We employed a numerical Computational Fluid Dynamics model of the bile flow within a strictured hepatic duct. We studied and compared the influence of stricture severity, stricture length, eccentricity, and bile flow property on the bile flow dynamics. The bile flow velocity, pressure distribution, pressure drop, and wall shear stress are provided in detail. The stricture alters the normal bile flow pattern and increases flow resistance. At the location upstream and downstream of the stricture, bile flow slows down. In the area of the stricture throat, bile flow is accelerated, and recirculation forms behind the stricture. The maximum pressure drop of the biliary system increases with the stricture length. The eccentricity makes the flow deflect away from the duct's centerline. The behavior of the deflected flow is significantly altered downstream of the stricture. Such bile flow behavior as deceleration and recirculation may lead to cholestasis. Stricture alters bile flow in the biliary tract, causing changes in biliary hydrodynamic indexes, which could potentially serve as an omen for gallstone formation and other related diseases. The consideration of the bile duct stricture could lead to better patient stratification.
