Patient's perception of exacerbations of COPD—the PERCEIVE study

Abstract: The evaluation of therapies requires the development of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) that help clinicians to understanding the symptoms, perceptions and feelings of patients with exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). With the aim of obtaining information on the perceptions of patients with COPD, their exacerbations and expectations of treatment, a random telephone contact survey in six countries was performed. From 83,592 households screened, 1100 subjects with symptoms compatible … Show more

“…The characteristic symptoms of COPD include breathlessness, cough and increased sputum production and, based on cohort studies, there is now extensive evidence that COPD symptoms have a considerable impact on patients' daily activities, health status and quality of life [4][5][6][7][8]. Furthermore, while COPD is diagnosed clinically based on persistent airflow limitation, it is the impact of symptoms on patients' daily lives that generally drives them to seek a diagnosis.…”

“…On the other hand, a weak breath is the most common symptom reported by long-term COPD patients 9 , and it significantly reduces the quality of life 10,11 . Therefore, it is necessary to estimate patients' airflow and thus modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale is used 12 .…”

“…Patients with severe COPD and frequent exacerbations present an excessive decline in lung function over time [13]. Patients are frightened of exacerbations and have important limitations in their daily life activities because of these episodes [14,15]. The impact of exacerbations in the health status of patients with COPD was first observed by SEEMUNGAL et al [5] in a cohort of severe patients over 1 yr of follow-up.…”

“…Based on this evidence and on the expectations of the patients, for whom the prevention of exacerbations is an important unmet need of COPD treatment [14], the prevention of episodes should be one of the main goals of COPD treatment. Table 1 summarises most of the pharmacological interventions available for the prevention of exacerbations.…”
