Patient Reported Burden of Asthma on Resource Use and Productivity Across 11 Countries in Europe

Abstract: IntroductionAsthma affects 30 million people in Western Europe, leading to substantial burden on healthcare systems and economies. REcognise Asthma and LInk to Symptoms and Experience (REALISE™) was a large European survey across 11 countries assessing patient attitudes and behaviors towards their asthma. The present study utilizes REALISE™ data to understand resource use and absenteeism in asthma.MethodsData were collected on absenteeism and healthcare resource use from 8000 asthma patients (aged 18–50 years)… Show more

“…Asthma is one of the most common non-communicable respiratory disease, affecting about 6% of general population, that is currently more than 300 millions of people in the world1, 2; the trend of asthma prevalence seems to be at least stable, 1 if not even increasing in the last few years 2, 3. This epidemiological situation accounts for high and increasing health-related costs (direct and indirect),4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 particularly in those patients with suboptimal control of asthma 10, 11…”

“…42 In several countries, asthma disease-management programs integrate nurses, particularly to educate patients and perform respiratory tests, 10 but not in France. 43 In the UK, the asthma workforce includes respiratory nurse specialists usually located within acute environments. 44 It is likely that a patient-as-partner approach, in which the patient is a full member of the healthcare team, could be more appropriate for asthma management than the traditional paternalistic approach, and even than the patient-centered approach.…”

“…[1][2][3] These characteristics may be associated with outcome and treatment response. 3 Poor asthma control has been associated with increased risk of asthma exacerbations, asthma-related hospitalization, 4,5 poor quality of life (QoL), 6 adverse impact on productivity, 7,8 and possibly, increased risk of mortality. [9][10][11] Dupilumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody directed against the interleukin (IL)-4 receptor-a, inhibits signaling of IL-4 and IL-13.…”
