Patient-Perceived Quality of Life after Total Hip Arthroplasty: Elective versus Traumatological Surgery

Abstract: Purpose. The aim was to evaluate and compare patient's health-related quality of life after THA for osteoarthritis and femoral neck fracture. The postoperative outcome was retrospectively evaluated in patients who underwent THA with an intracapsular femoral neck fracture (Group A) or with an hip osteoarthritis (Group B). Methods. Length discrepancy was measured on postoperative X-rays. Study groups were compared as to age, results of WOMAC and SF-36 tests, limb length discrepancy (LLD) by independent group t-t… Show more

“…For THA, previous studies have proposed that preoperative and postoperative functional scores, mental health status, patient resilience, arthritis affecting other major joints, elective versus traumatological, and patient expectation fulfillment are significant determinants of dissatisfaction 1,6,13–21 . However, most of these studies have limitations, including small sample sizes, 1,6,13,17 missing data, 1,6,13,14 retrospectively collected data, 13,15 and single‐center participation 1,6 …”

“…Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an established and successful intervention in addressing displaced femoral neck fracture and end-stage hip osteoarthritis, a condition affecting 2.5% of adults >40 years. 1,2 Despite the efficacy of THA, estimates show a failure rate of 1% per year, which usually requires revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA). 3 In 2005, Kurtz et al 1 projected a 200% increase in the amount of rTHA procedures performed by 2030.…”
