Patient Engagement In Health Care Safety: An Overview Of Mixed-Quality Evidence

Abstract: Patients and caregivers play a central role in health care safety in the hospital, ambulatory care setting, and community. Despite this, interventions to promote patient engagement in safety are still underexplored. We conducted an overview of review articles on patient engagement interventions in safety to examine the current state of the evidence. Of the 2,795 references we evaluated, 52 articles met our full-text inclusion criteria for synthesis in 2018. We identified robust evidence supporting patients' se… Show more

“…For operationalising the study concept, the definition of adherence as a behaviour carried out actively by people according to orders or advice was used [37]. The word adherence is used interchangeably with, and sometimes at the same time as, the word compliance, since both can indicate the outcome of care interactions between the healthcare provider and the caregiver [38][39][40][41][42]. However, adherence indicates responsibility and empowerment on the healthcare professional's part to actively perform the expected behaviour compared to compliance that shows responsibility on the patient's part to follow up the therapeutic regimen [43,44].…”

“…[55][56][57] Expanding the use of these interactive platform systems for the management of other conditions may have the potential to support many patient engagement initiatives. [58][59][60][61][62] Limitations of this review include the different definitions of interactivity, patient engagement, and outcome measures, making direct comparisons difficult. The differences in definitions, populations, and study designs led to heterogeneity, which in turn made a meta-analysis infeasible.…”

“…Patients and informal caregivers play a role in the safety of care provided across settings ranging from inpatient, to ambulatory, and home (Ocloo, Garfield, Dawson, & Franklin, 2017;Papautsky, 2019;Sharma et al, 2018;Ward & Armitage, 2012;Weingart, 2013). The need for continued attention and progress on "the patient (and family) in patient safety" is reflected in research funding priorities and the foci of consumer organizations and advocacy.…”

“…Patient and family engagement in safety often involves interactions with clinicians, for example, when a patient reports an undocumented change in medication to their physician or a nurse solicits patient and family preferences (Ozkaynak, Valdez, Holden, & Weiss, 2018). The integration of these multiple actors in the emerging models of patient safety (Schubert et al, 2017;Sharma et al, 2018) means it is important to understand clinicians' perspectives and experiences related to patient and family engagement.…”
