“…The results of the study may be useful in identifying groups of workers who are most at risk of developing problems with alcohol. While there are dangers associated with the identification and labelling of potential problem drinkers (Shain & Groeneveld, 1980), there is evidence that early identification can result in treatment being offered at a stage early enough to prevent irreversible physical and social consequences (Ogborne, 1974).…”

“…Early identification may be of mutual benefit to both employees and employers. While the effectiveness of work-based alcohol programmes such as EAPs has not been demonstrated adequately (Kurtz, Googins and Howard, 1984), there is still a case for early detection of alcohol problems before physical and social damage becomes irreversible (Ogborne, 1974). However, there is a need for such programmes to take account of the potential dangers of incorrect labelling, and the possibility of high alcohol consumption as a response to life stresses, including work-related factors.…”

“…In the available literature, an addict's level of education is given as a good or positive predictor of outcome [26]. Although in this study the high level of education gives the picture of a negative factor, the explanation can be found in the possibility that the highly educated are unemployed, which implies that the factor of unemployment leads to dissatisfaction with social adaptation.…”

“…According to the literature on outcome of alcohol treatment, the factors age, social stability, marital status, financial situation and education are positively related to the outcome. A criminal record, severe symptoms, previous inpatient treatment and arrests for drunkenness predict a negative outcome (Gibbs & Flanagan, 1977;Ogborne, 1978;Luborsky & McLellan, 1978;Cartwright, 1981;Solomon, 1982;De Leon, 1984). The interaction between the various predictors has not been extensively studied.…”
