Patient Characteristics and Emergency Department Factors Associated with Survival After Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Children and Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of a Nationally Representative Sample, 2006–2013

Abstract: The purpose of the study is to examine (1) nationally representative incidence rates of Emergency Department (ED) visits due to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in pediatric and young adult populations, (2) basic characteristics of the ED visits with SCA, and (3) patient and hospital factors associated with survival after SCA. We used the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample from 2006 to 2013. ICD-9-CM diagnostic codes identified ED visits due to SCA for patients ≤ 30 years old. Outcomes included yearly incidence… Show more

“…This patient presented to the ED after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The estimated incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) or sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in children and young adults varies widely from 1.1 to 6.9 per 100,000 person-years, with a mortality rate reaching 89.6% [7][8][9]. Given the high mortality rate, further investigation has been done to evaluate the underlying etiology of the deaths.…”

“…4 Demographic risk factors for SCDY include infancy and adolescence, Black race, and male biological sex. [5][6][7][8][9][10] Further research into these risk factors could result in future interventions-economic, environmental, and educational-to address them. 7 Additional individual risk factors include athletic participation and physiologic risks.…”

“…The primary outcome was the ROSC after the cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the number of adrenaline doses that were administered, and the secondary outcome was the neurological outcome at 1 month after the OHCA in relation to the number of adrenaline doses that were administered, as reported in previous study (1,(14)(15)(16)(17).…”
