Patient-centered Outcomes Research in Interstitial Lung Disease: An Official American Thoracic Society Research Statement

Abstract: Background: In the past two decades, many advances have been made to our understanding of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and the way we approach its treatment. Despite this, many questions remain unanswered, particularly those related to how the disease and its therapies impact outcomes that are most important to patients. There is currently a lack of guidance on how to best define and incorporate these patient-centered outcomes in ILD research. Objectives: To summarize the current state of patient-centered ou… Show more

“…Several validated questionnaires are available to assess HRQoL in patients with IPF, such as an IPF-specific version of the St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ-I), K-BILD and Living with IPF [ 29 ], although less is known for progressive fibrosing ILDs. K-BILD and, recently, the Living with Pulmonary Fibrosis questionnaire are potential tools to assess HRQoL in these patients [ 8 , 30 ].…”

“…These strategies center around the need to address mistrust and misconception, promote increased information and awareness of the benefits of trial participation, and ensure that investigators and study personnel are fully trained in cultural and racial competencies (108,112). Ensuring feasibility studies are undertaken prior to commencement of large trials and involving patients in the design stages of trials will also help to address several of these challenges (113). Global approach to treatment of sarcoidosis.…”

“…Several patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been adapted for use in ILDs. The PROMs utilized in ILD research and practice are mainly categorized into three groups: (1) disease-specific HRQOL, (2) generic HRQOL, and (3) domainspecific instruments (69). These instruments are ideally chosen as endpoints in research according to the objective of the study and characteristics of the study population.…”
