Pathotyping avian pathogenicEscherichia colistrains in Korea

Abstract: To examine the genetic background of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) that affects virulence of this microorganism, we characterized the virulence genes of 101 APEC strains isolated from infected chickens between 1985~2005. Serotypes were determined with available anti-sera and median lethal doses were determined in subcutaneously inoculated chicks. The virulence genes we tested included ones encoding type 1 fimbriae ( fimC ), iron uptake-related ( … Show more

“…The frequency of vat has been reported as 10%, 34% and 95% [19,20,23]. In this work, vat was detected in 13% of the isolates and it is located in pathogenicity island (PAI).…”

“…Iron uptake appears to be one of the main virulence factors in strains of APEC. Jeong et al [23], attribute the presence of redundant iron uptake systems in APEC to the fact that these could function in different host's niches.…”

“…A number of studies have demonstrated an association between the presence of these VGs and APEC pathogenicity (Janssen et al, 2001;Jeong et al, 2012;Mokady et al, 2005;Paixao et al, 2016). …”

“…Due to increased resistance to antibiotics and the risk of drug residues in poultry production, attention is more focused on vaccine development. This goal requires characterization of major and common virulence genes and determine their abundance in each geographic location (Kwaga et al 1994, Jeong et al 2012. Full understanding and use of the unique characteristics of APEC as targets for vaccination or diagnosis result in the planning criteria in order to control colibacillosis effectively (Boerlin andWhite 2006, Moulin-Schouleur et al 2006).…”
