Pathophysiology behind prolonged whiplash associated disorders: study protocol for an experimental study

Abstract: BackgroundThere is insufficient knowledge of pathophysiological parameters to understand the mechanism behind prolonged whiplash associated disorders (WAD), and it is not known whether or not changes can be restored by rehabilitation. The aims of the projects are to investigate imaging and molecular biomarkers, cervical kinaesthesia, postural sway and the association with pain, disability and other outcomes in individuals with longstanding WAD, before and after a neck-specific exercise intervention. Another ai… Show more

“…61 In a similar fashion, high baseline modularity has been used to predict larger cognitive gains in response to an exercise intervention in healthy older adults. 62 In light of these findings and with an ongoing trial investigating the effects of exercise on WAD (which includes fMRI), 63 network modularity presents a promising marker for treatment prediction.…”

“…(The first visit was a 60-minute examination, including information and the first exercise session, and the remaining sessions were 30-minute exercise sessions.) The neck specific internet-based exercise (NSEIT) group ( n = 24) had four PT visits only, combined with a web-based system [ 37 ]. (The first PT visit was the same as for the NSE group, and the remaining three PT visits were 30-minute sessions at weeks 2, 3 and 7 for follow-up and progression/adjustment of exercises.)…”

“…Data is stored at the Medical Faculty at Linköping University, Sweden (for 10 years after publication of data, according to law), and is accessible for the researchers. The trial was registered before data collection started (Clinicaltrial.gov Protocol ID: NCT03664934, initial release 09/11/2018) and the protocol was published 40 , 41 . All experiments were performed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and Swedish law.…”
