Pathophysiology and Treatment of Brain AVMs*

Abstract: Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are a major source of intracerebral hemorrhage in younger adults. First, some basic ideas about AVM anatomy, the influences of pressure, macrovascular flow, perfusion and the "steal effect", and some recent observations in the field of inflammatory markers and genetics are briefly discussed. Then, some clinical aspects in the presentation and the natural course of AVMs are highlighted, with special emphasis on the prediction of hemorrhage. Finally, some problems of t… Show more

“…[9] Gryzska and Fiehler added that compartments are in hemodynamic balance as there was no transfer of contrast material observed from one compartment to another in digital subtraction angiography. [11] This latter finding supports Kakizawa et al . 's finding on 3D rotational angiography that nidal compartments are independently fed and do not overlap.…”

“…As there are more compartments in the model, the less blood flows into the brain, possibly demonstrating in these models the “steal” phenomenon that has been described in angiographic studies. [611]…”

“…The challenge is to have more knowledge about AVM like about aneurysm if they will bleed or not, or how the development in time will be and to observe them with the current imaging modalities, which had a tremendous development in comparison to these ones of our first part, almost just angiography and later on axial computed tomography 10 .…”

“…The prevalence of this condition is 0.01%–0.5% of the population with presentation common in children and young adults [ 2 , 6 ]. In addition to haemorrhage, AVMs can present with epileptic seizures, chronic headaches, migraines and ischaemic neurologic deficits [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ].…”
