Pathology of the dorsal spine in ankylosing hyperostosis.

Abstract: While the pathological features of the spine in ankylosing spondylitis have been described in considerable detail in recent years, little published work is available on the subject of the pathology of the spine in ankylosing hyperostosis (AH).We here describe some of the pathological findings in the dorsal spines of twenty subjects with AH. Materials and methods SELECTION OF SPECIMENSDorsal spines were removed from twenty subjects at postmortem examination. They were judged to have AH on the basis of the prese… Show more

“…The observation that the newly formed bone in DISH appeared to “push” the ALL to the left was described in 1950 by Forestier and in 1974 by Vernon‐Roberts 14, 15. The presumption that the formation of new bone could begin as an ossification of the ALL was proposed by Resnick et al in 1978 16.…”

“…In areas with high levels of fluoride, the first and second criteria of Utsinger (1985) will not distinguish between skeletal fluorosis and DISH in a skeletal sample, although unilateral fusion is indicative of DISH rather than skeletal fluorosis (Vernon-Roberts et al, 1974). Additional criteria such as bone density, width of the intervertebral space, involvement of the apophyseal joints, completeness of fusion, and the extent of extravertebral enthesophytes need to be taken into account.…”

“…The posterior longitudinal ligaments may become ossified, and there is sometimes ankylosis of the apophyseal joints (El Garf and Khater, 1984). In general, the intervertebral disc space is preserved without marked narrowing (Vernon-Roberts et al, 1974; but see Harris et al, 1974). There may be involvement of other joints apart from the spine.…”

“…(6) described a prevalence rate in Finland for vertebral ankylosing hyperostosis of 3.8% in men and 2.6% in women aged 40 years and over. Vernon-Roberts et al (7) reported a 6% autopsy prevalence. However, Henrard and Bennett (5) have described overall prevalence rates of this disease of 25% in Pima Indian men and 4.7% in Pima Indian women aged 15 and over living in Arizona.…”
