Pathology of AA Amyloidosis in Domestic Sheep and Goats

Abstract: Abstract. We describe the main pathologic changes in small ruminants affected by AA amyloidosis, together with the partial sequence of the protein involved. Twenty-one sheep and one goat were selected for presenting macroscopic kidney lesions compatible with systemic amyloidosis. Available tissue samples were studied by histologic, immunopathologic, and ultrastructural means. Renal lesions were characterized grossly by pale cortical surfaces with scattered, miliary, whitish-yellow foci and on cut cortical surf… Show more

“…3 Amyloidosis associated with chronic infections is caused by deposition of fibril-forming fragments of serum amyloid A (SAA) and is the most frequent form of amyloidosis in ruminants. 19,36 Amyloidosis has been associated with E. rhusiopathiae but has not been reported in sheep, although amyloidosis affecting the liver, kidneys, and gut has been described in goat kids with chronic polyarthritis and a bronchopneumonia. 34 No organisms were isolated from the joints, but Mannheimia haemolytica was grown from the lungs.…”

“…In animals, at least eight different diseases associated to misfolded proteins or amyloid precursors have been described (Mensua et al, 2003). These diseases, called amyloidosis may present as localized or systemic disorders (Sipe et al, 2012) with symptoms depending on the tissues where amyloid are depositted.…”
