Pathology and Abnormality of the First Permanent Molar among Children

Abstract: The first permanent molar (FPM) plays an essential role in the masticatory function by contributing to the implementation and the maintenance of the occlusion. However, it is considered as the most frequently affected and the earliest affected tooth by caries; 27.4% of the 6-8 years old children have developed at least one cavity on one of the four first permanent molars, according to a study conducted among 3276 school children in Casablanca .Therefore, the FPM should benefit from special vigilance on the par… Show more

“…It is most prone to caries owing to its immature enamel since its phase of mineralization concurs with early childhood caries and the window of infectivity. It erupts when the maintenance of oral hygiene is challenging, thus making it more susceptible to dental caries [ 26 ]. Owing to the complex root canal morphology of mandibular molars, especially in the mesial root, root canal therapy is a challenging task with an unexpected prognosis.…”

“…Except for chewing food, FPM is vital for maintaining the face's vertical dimension and plays a critical role in occlusion formation ( 14 ). It participates in the maxillary growth and physiology of the mandibular system ( 15 ). Hence, the early loss of FPM due to caries impacts individuals' future oral and dental health.…”
