Pathological evaluation of hepatic dearterialization in encapsulated hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Specimens of encapsulated hepatocellular carcinoma from 48 patients who had received no previous treatment and from six patients previously treated by hepatic arterial interruption by embolization or ligation were obtained by resection and examined for incidence and extent of necrosis of the tumor. Among the 48 specimens from the non-pre-treated patients, 25 tumors were smaller than 5 cm and showed no notable necrosis; of the 23 remaining tumors--which were larger than 5 cm--12 (52%) showed spontaneous central… Show more

“…Normal-phase HPLC was used for polar lipids (phospholipids, sphingolipids) and reverse-phase HPLC for neutral lipids (triacylglycerols, diacylglycerols, cholesteryl esters). Total cholesterol and cholesteryl esters were analyzed by HPLC/APCI/MS/MS because these apolar compounds only result in a relatively poor ESI response [ 52 ]. Prior to MS, sperm were separated from SP by density gradient centrifugation and sperm lipids were extracted with chloroform–methanol.…”

“…The patient was then positioned as for a right posterolateral thoracotomy. A side-viewing rigid laparoscope and an intraoperative ultrasonographic probe (laparoscopic linear 7.5 MHz; Aloka, Tokyo, Japan) were inserted through a 10 mm disposable laparoscopy port, as reported elsewhere [9]. Under laparoscopic control, the ultrasonographic probe was guided onto the liver surface, and the tumor was localized.…”

“…Most hepatic metastases of HAS showed tumor necrosis regardless of tumor size. Necrosis can be found even in nodules less than 1cm in diameter, whereas the necrosis rate of HCC is relatively low (10%-40%) [9] . Tumor necrosis is believed to be caused by hypoxia resulting from tumor overgrowth and subsequent necrosis in the tumor center [10] .…”
