Pathological and Microbiological Studies on Pneumonic Lungs from Danish Calves

Abstract: During 1 year, the association between microbiological and pathological findings in 72 lungs from calves submitted to the Danish Veterinary Laboratory for diagnostic purposes was studied. All cases were evaluated pathologically and bacteriologically, whereas only 68 cases were examined for the presence of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), parainfluenza-3 virus (PI-3 virus) and bovine coronavirus, 62 cases for bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVD), 45 cases for bovine adenovirus and 51 cases for mycoplasm… Show more

“…However, the calf may have contracted the H. somni infection after the lavage and the P. multocida infection. [29] described H. somni as a frequent finding in autopsied calves with respiratory disease in Denmark. H. somni has seldom been found in Finland, with only 10 reports in the last 10 years and only in connection with respiratory disease [17].…”

“…In this study the RespoCheck bacterial multiplex real-time PCR (abbreviated to RespoCheck PCR) was evaluated with commonly used culture methods as reference. This PCR has been developed for the detection of four bacterial pathogens commonly associated with BRD [9, 13], i.e. Pasteurella multocida , Mannheimia haemolytica , Histophilus somni and Trueperella pyogenes .…”

“…It has been frequently isolated from pneumonic [1,8,18] and healthy [16,17] calves. By itself, this bacterium does not usually cause serious disease, but it can be a significant pathogen if associated with infections with other bacteria [7], viruses [15], or Mycoplasma [14,17] when calves are stressed [5]. It has been isolated frequently from the nasal cavity or pneumonic lesions of calves with BRD [8,9,13].…”
