Pathological and Microbiological Investigations of Pneumonic Pasteurellosis in Sheep

Abstract: pneumonia suspected lung tissues were examined histopathologically, immunohistochemically and microbiologically, in Sanliurfa province. After definition of the macroscopic localization of the consolidated areas in the lungs, tissue samples were taken and preserved in cold chain and 10% formalin for microbiological and pathological examinations, respectively. For bacteriological examination of Pasteurella spp. lung specimens were inoculated in 7% sheep blood agar and Mc Conkey agar. After routine pathological t… Show more

“…The diagnosis of Pasteurella spp. infection by bacteriological methods has been reported to be difficult due to many factors such as antibiotic treatment and frozen or autolytic material (28, 37). Especially when the tissues are contaminated with other microorganisms, a selective medium is required for the isolation of M. haemolytica and P. multocida .…”

“…Similar results were reported by Ozyildiz et al . (28). Detection of M. haemolytica antigens in pneumonic lungs by IHC is more reliable than detection by bacterial isolation.…”

“…Previous or combined infection with some respiratory viruses may increase the susceptibility of farm animals to secondary bacterial pneumonia (Cutlip et al, 1993;Ozyildiz et al, 2013). Sheep are particularly sensitive to parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV-3) and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV); antibodies against these viruses have been demonstrated in this species (Lemhkuhl et al, 1985;Giangaspero et al, 1997).…”
