In a recent discussion of the pathogenesis of pulmonary emphysema Ebert and Pierce (7) pointed out that the occurrence of the disease in younger individuals might be related to genetic factors resulting in weakness of the fibrous framework of the lung. Seebohm and Bedell (15) presented a compilation of cases with primary emphysema in which dyspnoea on exertion was the initial and dominating symptom, while Hurst (1 1) gave a review of the literature on familial occurrence of emphysema.…”
