Pathogen Resistance Signalling in Plants

Abstract: Within natural ecosystems, most plants are resistant to most pathogens. At a fundamental level, this seemingly simply truth may hold the key to our understanding of how plants have evolved to survive under a myriad of environmental conditions and their associated stresses. Indeed, in defining how plants evolve, adapt and maintain broad spectrum resistance to most pathogens – typically referred to as non‐host resistance – we may not only reveal the mechanisms that underpin plant resistance signalling but also t… Show more

“…The consistent decline in the expression levels of the seven MsmTERFs identified in M. sinostellata (Figure 5C,D) is in agreement with previous findings in Z. mays [73]. R-genes play pivotal roles in restricting pathogen invasion and triggering plant defense responses [107].…”

“…All the unigenes were blasted against the seven public databases for functional annotation (Table S3). 173, 103,146,820,128,216,135,136,128,718,107,462, and 138,676 unigenes were identified in the database of Nr, Nt, Swissprot, KEGG, KOG, Pfam, and GO, respectively, which became the basis for the functional annotation of a total number of 191,343 unigenes.…”

“…These structural variants are shaped such that the chemotypes show distinct separations without any intermediate phenotypes. This allelic heterogeneity is in contrast to previous work on other biotic interactions genes like pathogen resistance gene-for-gene loci that typically have two moderate frequency stable alleles creating the phenotypic variation within the species (Atwell et al, 2010;Corrion & Day, 2001;MacQueen, Sun, & Bergelson, 2016). In other cases alleles of genes involved in biotic defense can present more complex patterns, e.g.…”

“…However, mlo is associated with yield penalties (Kjaer et al, 1990) and increased susceptibility to some hemibiothrophic and necrotrophic fungi (Jarosch et al, 1999;Kumar et al, 2001;McGrann et al, 2014). Thus, the search for alternative sources of resistance to powdery mildew remains important for barley breeding (Czembor, 2002;Corrion and Day, 2015). The wild progenitor H. vulgare spp.…”
