Path calculation, technology and opportunities in dry fiber winding: a review

Abstract: Filament winding is a well-established process to manufacture composite parts. With the advancement of automation and process control technologies, the winding of dry fibers to manufacture a preform for liquid composite molding (LCM) processes is feasible. This study presents an overview of dry fiber winding and explains the most important process aspects. It addresses the application of differential geometry to the winding technique. The formulation of geodesic and non-geodesic equations and their solution is… Show more

“…Especially, the transversal parts of this shear load lead to slippage on a convex surface and must be supported by friction forces. [2] In this study, only a 0 -load (pulling direction) will be regarded because the highest force can be expected. Also, this setup is simpler and more transferable.…”

“…There are many concerns in the manufacturing process of the high-quality composite frames that have been investigated in the past years [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. The effect of winding patterns in filament winding of composite cylinder was studied by Azevedo et al [ 37 ].…”

“…Mlýnek et al described an optimized winding process that was considered for the case of a generally 3D geometrically shaped frame having a constant circular cross-section of the frame [1,23]. The optimization, and also the control of robot trajectory in the fiber winding process, has been the topic of many studies for the accurate fabrication of composite frames [1,35,40,[42][43][44][45][46][47].…”

“…A similar topic, however, focused rather on the study of trajectory control of an arbitrary shape winding mandrel in 3D circular braiding is explored in [20,23,27]. Sofi et al presented dry fiber winding possibilities and explanation of the most important processes of winding [22], and Polini et al pointed out that the tension of winding during robotic filament winding technology is a very important parameter that influences directly the defects and the mechanical property of composite [23]. Azevedo et al investigated the effects of mosaic winding pattern on carbon-fiber composite cylinder fabricated using filament winding, and found the optimum radius to thickness ratio for optimum strength and stiffness properties [24].…”
